“I saw this new Path train coming into 33rd St. They didn’t let any passengers on but I did spot a TV screen inside and an electronic sign on the outside. Looks spiffy!”

Answers I know (sorta) – current plan is to replace every last car of the current fleet. The oldest cars are approaching 40 and will be junked, the youngest will likely replace the current work cars. PATH PR on the sadly out of date web site is that all the platforms will be made the same length, Harrison will get a major rebuild, and signals will be modernized. Who knows if the amazingly bumpy Hoboken to Christopher tunnel will be smoothed out so that trains can go faster without bouncing passengers against the ceiling.
Nice Pix, BTW – I tried to take some a month ago at Hoboken, and was chastised by an orange vest who told me it was illegal. He seemed flummoxed when I told him no it wasn’t. I vote for the plastic staying too – reminds me of a 1970s suburban living room.

Actually the oldest cars have already passed 40. I heard that Kawasaki would be taking many (most?) of the old cars back, scrapping some and refurbishing the better ones for reuse elsewhere.
I don’t think they’ll be able to make all the platforms the same length throughout the system; but I thought they were planning that at least on the NWK-WTC line, where they are concentrating the vast majority of their work in the near and mid-term. I wouldn’t expect a whole lot of radical improvement in the Hoboken area.
Harrison station rebuild plans are moving right along from what I hear.
Don’t know if they’ll be able to re-do the track in the tunnels to/from Christopher St. – only reason the EXPL-WTC tunnel is nice & smooth is because they had it completely out of service long enough to re-do the entire track bed.
Technically, it is against PATH regulations to take pictures in their system. I’ve researched it in the past; you used to be able to apply for a one-day permit or something like that, but I think they did away with that and now it’s completely off-limits. However, that rule doesn’t seem to be enforced as stringently if you’re a group of lightly-clad young women say, heading into the city on a weekend evening or night. Imagine that.

Yeah, I’m a stander, too. Love that nook on either side of the doors to grab some space and read the paper. When details like that get lost, I wonder if people who built (and bought) these trains surveyed the people who ride the trains and got their feedback.
Seat colors remind me of Yankee Stadium. I hope the new cars still feature those historical plaques: “This car is dedicated to…. Mahwah.” For some reason, I always got a kick out of those.
And how excited are the local kids? Brand new windows to scratch up!

I happen to ride the new PATH cars twice today. They are very similar to the new MTA subway cars, which makes sense, since Kawasaki is the manufacturer for both.
It’s weird to have the same recorded voice that announces MTA stops letting you know that the next stop is such and such, and has connections to such and such on the PATH system.
It was funny to hear everyone oooing and ahhing at the new trains they were riding. (myself included)
