Amazing video re-construction
Remember the US Airways Flight 1549 “Miracle Splash Landing” in the Hudson River back in January?
Well software company Exosphere3D recently created a new high-quality 3D rendered animation of the flight – incorporating all available data.
“This animation is based on all currently available data concerning the US Airways Flight 1549 crash (Cactus 1549). Satellite imagery, elevation models and robust GIS mapping methods are utilized to create a vegetation model, terrain model and ground clutter (3D buildings). Of all available audio tracks, only two are used, La Guardia Tower and New York TRACON Departure controller position. Radar data as well as the onboard Flight Data Recorder are utilized in constructing the flightpath of the aircraft.”

I cannot catch a break today. A plane has apparently gone down in the Hudson (closer to NYC).
North Hudson is now in Weehawken assisting… I was cooking lunch when I overheard this. It also appears NY Waterway Ferries are assisting with rescue efforts.
Discuss.

I’m a pilot and I have never had a checkride where the examiner hasnt given me a simulated engine out procedure. I’m sure every commercial pilot with a type rating (what you need to fly a specific type of airliner) goes through extensive engine out training as well (I’m not an airline pilot wouldnt know for sure). That being said it certainly helps that the pilot had a glider rating its a whole differnt ballgame obviously and yes at the USAFA some of the first flying that cadets do is in gliders.
If you want to learn about a similar feat check out Air Transat Flight 236 which was a transatlantic flight from canada to portugal. The pilot stretched the glide 20 minutes to make a landing in the Azores from out over the ocean. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Transat_Flight_236

I saw a documentary on that about 5 years ago – if ever they repeat it WATCH IT! It was an incredible story. The co-pilot calculated that they would just make it judging by the height/distance to the nearest runway barring any change in weather. They showed actual footage of the landing too. Awesome story.

Well, THIS is very interesting. I assume the NTSB will be looking into this pretty carefully.

The earliest that any type of report from the NTSB will be around 12 months more then likely 15 months. They examine everything and i mean every single item. They interview the passengers and as many eyewitnesses as they feel necessary, these people do not fool around they are very very serious.

I thought the plane was going to be sitting on land/dock somewhere near the Colgate clock in J.C.. Went there over the weekend while in the area and didn’t see it. I suppose the NTSB shipped it elsewhere.

MR–last I heard it was going to a hanger in an “undisclosed location” in NJ to be dismantled and examined. I don’t think we’ll ever see it outside again.

Yeah, I was standing at the Colgate Clock and looking over at the pier at Colony Road and was wondering if they had it indoors somewhere. From where I was standing, I saw no plane outdoors.

I don’t get it, what was the point of that video?
His website says he bills $200 per hour for this sort of stuff, I wonder who would bother.
