Inauguration Happy Hour at Carpe Diem

“Dear friends in hope,

Thank you! Next week, the hope for our country, the next president of the United States, Senator Barack Obama will be sworn in–and you’re part of it! So, THANK YOU!

And now, we should celebrate! A local bar Carpe Diem (14th and Grand) has generously opened their upstairs for us. For those that aren’t heading down to DC, we should all watch the speech together as the Hoboken Hopemongers that we are! We’ll have coverage of the festivities playing, as well as we’ll watch Barack’s swearing in & subsequent speech, at least once. We would love for you to join us!

$30 cash pays for the Open Bar for three hours. There will also be light refreshments. Limited space, so definitely RSVP legitimately & soon!

And, in the spirit of grassroots organizing & community outreach, please bring sturdy paper plates, napkins, cups or plastic forks & knives to donate to the local shelter.

Can’t wait to see you there! YES WE DID!

(Parking isn’t that bad here, but, it’s still Hoboken, so if you’re taking public transit, take the Light Rail to 9th St.)”

[411 Travel Note: it appears that if you want to avoid the 9th St. Light rail station – it may be .06 miles less walking if you took the Weehawken stop and walked under the bridge instead.]

MF– once this writer gave Bush credit for sealing our border, he lost me. If you can’t criticize Bush on that issue, you know he’s just repeating White House talking points.

I think The Economist summed up the Bush years the best. It’s not very flattering, but it’s fair.

MSNBC is reporting the inauguration is in the neighborhood of $150mil, with about $40mil coming from Obama donations. That an expensive four day party, given the nature of the times, but I think the country needs something to cheer about. If anyone complains about the price, we can always suspend operations in Iraq for 4 or 5 hours and call it a push.

I will disagree with half of Obama’s policies (if only because they will continue Bush’s policies: big government, big spending, big debt), but let’s turn the page loudly on the last 8 years. Anyone who surrounds himself with a Cabinet as moderate as Obama’s, who honors ‘rivals’ like McCain with a dinner, who stops at Arlington on his way to Washington, who respects and talks with people who disagree with him, is off to a good start.
They announced yesterday that we’re having a 3 hour office party during the inauguration. My response: I’ll be working from home.

Seriously, wtf?
I hear you KS. I’m trying to lose some weight too so no more office cake for me.
As far as what I have read, the money that has been set aside by the government is $43 million, which isn’t out of line of previous years. The rest is coming from contributions.
I don’t think this is correct. Contributions are covering a portion of the events but the security is covered by the government. I heard that there were 45,000 policeman for security along the train route to DC. The states/cities pay these costs and will probably ask the federal government for reimbursement. The government also covers the security in DC. Estimates are that this inauguration will cost up to 4 times that of Bush’s first one and we pay most of that.
i’d rather have my eyelids propped open and be forced to watch reruns of Rosie for a week than spend 30seconds sitting in the same bar with Fat-E as he powers tap beer after tap beer at an open bar and simulates fellatio on barry hussein obama on the television. are you guys going to sing We Shall Overcome at the end?
Why do you hate America?
