Ruckus at Hoboken High

1/9/2009:

Not sure what the incident was – but there’s a big fracas going on NOW at Hoboken High School. Sounds like a large crowd, yelling and screaming – along with cops yelling and out of breath – begging for backup. They’ve evacuated the gym – and all people are leaving the Grand St. exit.

Could be a fight or some other kind of unruly circumstance. They’re sending the ambulance now.
I was walking my dog around 11:30 on that Friday night around 3rd and Clinton and I saw about 15 high school kids jump a lone kid walking frantically away from them. It was violence I’ve never seen, and never expected in Hoboken, my home town. I literally was scared for my life given the size of the mob. I called 911 and subsequently Hoboken police — they asked for the address and hung up immediately. It was pretty scary and I hope not a harbinger of things to come it a tough budget environment.
Could have been a gang initiation.

Girl gets 30 stiches and officer injured after fight at Hoboken High School A 17-year-old girl received 30 stitches in her forehead and a police officer was treated for cuts and bruises Friday night after a fight erupted at a Hoboken High School basketball game causing the match to be canceled, police said. Anthony Falco. Hoboken High School was playing High Tech High School. High Tech was leading 53-48 when the game was canceled, said Vince Nardiello, High Tech’s athletic coordinator. The fight spread to “an entire section of the stands,” according to a report, and cops cleared the gym, canceling the game in the third quarter, Falco said. After the crowd left, two teens tried to get back into the gym. When the officer on duty tried to stop them, one of the teens, a 17-year-old girl, punched the officer in the jaw. As she began to throw another punch, the officer grabbed her arm, and the crowd standing outside surrounded him, Falco said. There were about 100 to 150 teens outside the gym, screaming and yelling, according to a report. The crowd standing outside began pushing the officer and one of them punched him in the back. The officer began swinging his baton “to create a safety zone,” and accidentally struck the girl in the… Read more »
