Readerpix: 1986 Hoboken

1/5/2009:

Hoboken411 reader estevens sent in this photo from 1986! Anyone recall where it was? The only 96 XXX numbered address with Tuesday 2pm street cleaning is Garden St. – but I have no idea whether they’ve changed those rules in the past 20 years.

“Hereโ€™s a photo taken in 1986 when Hoboken still had witch doctors with storefronts. What really caught my eye, however, was the No Parking sign in front. The sign sets an eight-hour limit for parking between 9am and 5pm. Is it possible to exceed eight hours within that time frame? Were there time-shifters in Hoboken 22 years ago?”

[Stay tuned for tomorrow’s Readerpix entry! – Note: one reader’s photo(s) will be featured each day at approximately 11am. Unless your photo is time-sensitive – it will be published in the order it was received! Additional note: Your pictures will have a better chance of being published if they’re in “landscape” mode, as opposed to the taller “portrait” modes… ]

In the Caribbean neighborhood straddling Bed-Stuy and North Crown Heights in Brooklyn, there are several of these stores. One on Bedford Avenue, next to the bus stop just above Fulton Street, has the various candles (some of them gory with pictures of pierced martyrs), but also many room sprays with titles like “Money House Blessing.” They have a pink liquid in a bottle that looks like the cheapest public restroom hand soap, and they slap a label on it with a black cat and the name “Jinx Removing Floor Cleaner.”

Anybody who pays hard earned money for Jinx Removing Floor Cleaner can’t complain about whatever name they get called.

So would they kill the goat FOR you, or did you have to hack it to pieces yourself? ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I had to put on my coat and have another look. The sliver of brickwork visible on the left side matches what’s presently there, and there are sawed-off meter poles along the block. So there’s my answer.

Way back when I got my Chinese food from the place next-door to the right (corner of First & Garden) but don’t remember the Botanica. The Chinese place collapsed or burned or both.

estevens, I remember the place: 1st or 2nd and Garden. Never ventured in, though.

Does the 8 hour parking possibly mean there was a meter there and it only had to be paid from 9-5?
