Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance in Action

12/30/2008:

Thought you guys might like to see a quick video of our under-appreciated Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

This past weekend – a homeless guy was drunk and slumped over at Vic’s Place convenience stand by the PATH station. He “requested” medical help.

See? Not only do they provide quick medical assistance – they also help clean up the streets!! Good job, guys!

Highly professional EMTS??? Once a person has that NJ STATE DEPT OF HEALTH EMT patch on and all of the EMT’s at Hoboken do, they passed the same exact test as all the other members on paid squads. So we (volunteers and paid) have been through the same training as each other, same standards, same tests, “Volunteers” give their time, a lot of members come from paid squads(full time jobs, etc) , but they like helping ppl a lot so they volunteer. SO I have no idea why your offending HVAC by calling them “unprofessional.” To able to volunteer a midnite to 8 am shift for 0 pay is called dedication.

The Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps need a new acronym. I always see HVAC and think they’re a bunch of HVAC contractors.

Most HVAC members do a great job. The EMS field does have bad apples as well. But for the most part HVAC members serve the residents and visitors to the mile square city above and beyond. As for the taxes that has nothing to do with HVAC but all to do with Mayor Roberts. Hvac does get some funds from the city. But it amounts to maybe and a big maybe at that to one weeks pay for the smallest city dept on payroll. How they manage to provide the service that they do with the small amount of donations they get beats me. So just remember next time you get sick or injured and call for an ambulance. Cause without them that would be a $350.00 minumim bill you have to pay.

I want taxes and spending cut as much as anyone else but if elainetyger says is true they do a great service for Hoboken and ask little if anything in return.

Other than that all I’m going to say to HVAC is thank you.

If Hoboken had to pay someone else for what HVAC does, you would be paying a lot more, including covering the transport costs of the indigent uninsured. And wtf does noshow jobs have to do with HVAC? None of us get paid, not even the officers, some of whom put in over 20 hours a week every week. We have to pay for our CPR recertification classes, for transportation to and from the corps (maybe nothing to you, but something to the college students who ride in from Bayonne and further to volunteer here) and the CPR and continuing ed classes; I pay for malpractice insurance “just in case.” We even have to pay for our own boots and uniforms. Please, stop harping on this one issue and find something else to complain about. I have taken continuing ed classes in 3 or 4 other volunteer corps in northern NJ over the past year, and their municipalities provide them not only with weekly cleaning but with building renovations as well. Some of the municipalities pay salaries for the weekday EMTs, since those are the hardest shifts to cover anywhwere with volunteers. Even then, one of the classes had the students stuffing fundraising envelopes afterward, and I stayed to help out and chat. That town had less than the call volume and number of residents served that Hoboken has, and yet they expected to get almost as many dollars total as HVAC got from their 2007 fundraising mailing. So if you… Read more »
