Micey situation at East LA

12/22/2008:
Here’s a reader letter from “GG” that goes into detail about brazen mice just eating the food droppings over at East LA Mexican Restaurant (508 Washington).

Of Mice and Margaritas
“I had a really disgusting experience at East LA on 12/18/08 and I want to be sure everyone knows to stay away!
My friends and I arrived at East LA around 8pm and stayed until about 10:30pm. Shortly before we left, my friend pointed to the floor and said “Oh my god! It is! Look! Mice!” There were four (FOUR!) mice running around under the tables eating food and pretty much just hanging out. My friend said she thought she saw one when we first arrived but didn’t say anything, thinking she was imagining it.
I flagged over one of the servers and based on the look on my face he said “Mice? I know…” I was really fired up at that point because I couldn’t believe that the restaurant was aware of the situation and was still serving customers. It is so unsanitary it is to have rodents running around!”
Read the rest of the letter after the jump!!
(Chips and Mice-amole, continued…)
“The man said I would have to talk to the manager, and I asked him to send him over. The manager didn’t come back to our table so I flagged down our server. She said the manager had just left and didn’t want to talk to customers. She said she brought this issue to his attention earlier in the evening and claimed he said “So what? What do you want me to do about it?”
One of my friends actually pulled out her camera and was chasing the mice around the back of the restaurant trying capture evidence. I’m sorry to say, they moved a little too quickly. I even had to push a fork on the floor at one point when a mouse was getting too close to my feet.
Our server suggested I contact the Board of Health, and I called first thing this morning. They are contacting an investigator about it, but one of the women on the phone told me, “Oh no, that’s the mayor’s restaurant,” which I in fact confirmed on http://www.hobokennj.org/html/mayor/mayor.html. Knowing that, I’m not sure how the situation will be handled.
I was particularly embarrassed because I was with a few friends that live in Manhattan who have only been to Hoboken once or twice. I kept apologizing, telling them I had never seen anything like this before. I’m afraid, however, that they went back to the city thinking that this is something that is condoned in Hoboken and warrants no more than a shoulder shrug.
And not that free food would make this in ANY WAY acceptable, but East LA still had the nerve to give us our full $100 bill.”
“GG” Followed up today – and said:
“I rounded back with the Board of Health today and was told that they closed the case because the inspector did not see mice while walking through. The inspector is not in the office this week, but the problem has obviously not been handled.”

I was there the night it happens! Noticed all the commotion. wasn’t shocked by the mice. This is not the first restaurant i’ve encountered this problem in Hoboken. I just went about my meal and payed no Mind. I’ve eaten at East L.A. a million times and this was a first. I know for a fact the customers complaining got a free pitcher of Margaritas. If i was so offended i would of left. I think they were more offended by the $100.00 check! I even seen mice in Anthony Davids.

I go to East La very often and I believe the staff is extremely nice and very helpful. What do you people expect the staff to do if a mouse is running around? You want a free meal? I dont think so. The restaurant is going under construction. They are getting new floors and new seating. Every restaurant has mice and with all the things going on with renovations, they just seem to be coming out. Exterminators come every night to solve the problem so for all you people who think they know whats going on and assume things, East La is doing everything they could to get rid of the problem.

Just out of curiosity, when do you think was the last time East LA received a visit from the Board of Health? Somehow I’m sure they are less assiduous in checking up on the places owned by certain well connected people in town . . .

I was a waiter for 2 months once (college days) at a Mexican restaurant and we only had one rat – nicknamed him Hugo (after the hurricane that hit Texas way back when). Had to be about 30lbs, bigger than a cat. The owners kept a pretty clean place (I know since I worked back and front), and put everything away at night. But Hugo still got into everything. The owners tried everything to get rid of the rat, construction crew came in and sealed up the building, exterminator, tried to ambush him, everything – rat had no fear. Hugo kept getting into the flour and tortillas (his favorite). It was spooky to see the huge claw marks on the ripped bags and storage containers. Before I eventually left, I was waiting on a table with 2 female customers when Hugo decided to make an appearance. He came strolling into the middle of the floor and just walked past us all like it was nothing. The women ran out screaming. That rat was huge. They closed 2 months later.

Mice/rats hang around wherever there is food (and sometimes where there isn’t food and just urine, such as on train tracks). We can’t just treat them like they shouldn’t exist because they creep us out since. That would be asinine. So protect food, keep it sealed and well-guarded (locked away) that it will minimize the chances of a rat/mouse getting into your appetizers and entrees. For as long as said rat/mouse hasn’t joined in on our “party of four”, we should be fine big boys and girls.
What works wonders domestically, on the other hand, is a cat. My neighbors upstairs have been freaked out by mice. But we haven’t– not for three years so far– ’cause we have a cat.
Speaking of nature’s course, has anyone seen those uber-roaches that crawl all over Hoboken’s streets when its rainy/moist out? Gross, yes. But they have just as much a right as we do to live here.

mooshu, isn it not a coincidence that Sanibel went missing while this story of mice at East LA broke? And now Sanibel is back at home. Hmmm.

I have ate at many fancy restaurants and saw things worst than mice and roaches. By the way, Roberts did not sell the place. He is still the owner.

To the best of my knowledge, he still owns the building as well as the “Daily News Building” and is part of the corporation that owns the building housing “The Madison”. He has done well…time to retire in politics?

I’m a proud graduate of Hoboken High and I found it to be a very good school. These post are obviously from people who just assume things.
