Healthy Hoboken – December 2008

This month’s Healthy Hoboken article deals with the ever-so-annoying issue of stomach problems!

Dear Dr. Brayton,

I have been having digestive problems for years. My internist took a CT scan and sent me to a gastroenterologist who told me I had IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and I would have to learn to live with it. Though I took the medications, I never improved. I feel since I have nothing to lose, I should see a chiropractor. What are your thoughts?

Subluxations are one of many causes

healthy-hoboken-with-dr-laura-brayton.jpgDear A.R.,

There are many causes of IBS which is such a vague and general diagnosis. Although chiropractors do not specifically treat any organic conditions including IBS, many stomach ills are due to spinal misalignments (subluxations).

If your IBS is due to your subluxations (where the spinal misalignments are irritating the nerves that connect your stomach and your brain), then it is possible to improve the IBS symptoms through chiropractic manipulation. Removing spinal subluxations is good for your overall health, so I would recommend you be checked out and see if adjustments do in fact provide you with relief. In addition, looking for food allergies, candida, parasites, and emotional triggers for the IBS symptoms is also important.

Yours in health,
Dr. Brayton

I knew someone once who was diagnosed with IBS. Long story short, after some experimentation he realized that not taking his daily vitamins cleared up the problem. I think it was the vitamin B pills, but if you take vitamins this is also something to consider.

the various low carb forums I follow are full of people who’ve gotten rid of IBS simply by eliminating most carbs from their diet. Something to consider.

Food allergies or sensitivites can cause these problems. I would suggest going to see Inna Topplier 201-238-2720 in Hoboken. She is a nutritionist and very knowledgeable. She can do a food allergy test which might help you to determine what is triggering the IBS
