Retro Hobokenpix: Union Club

12/3/2008:
Taking a break from my own Hoboken Photos for the rest of the week - instead will feature a different “retro” photo found from the Life Magazine photo archives! (Thanks to Chris for finding them!)

You might wonder where was this picture taken?

Life Magazine says: “US Steel Board Chairman Benjamin F. Fairless (L) hailing a cab before announcing his retirement to the stockholders.” Photo was taken May of 1955.
Find out where this was - after the jump!
This photo was taken at 6th and Hudson - facing south. Pretty much all buildings seen in this picture are still there.

To all who like going to the gym and work out, i warn you all stay away from SUPREME FITNESS. The gym is a nasty dump in so many ways and the person who so call works there goes by the name of FRANK is just as nasty. So if anyone likes going to a jail house type gym with a jerk that works there then join SUPREME FITNESS the suckest gym in hoboken.

Way to stay on topic!
A friend of mine used to live in the former Union Club building. The apartments in there are absolutely gorgeous.

Too bad you can’t see in that photo what used to be in the Stevens 6th Street Parking lot at that corner.

What used to be there?

The current parking lot might have been a small church.

I kind of remember some old shacks being in the back of the lot when I was a young lad.

I don’t know! That’s why I wish we could see what was there.
It’s like the grassy knowl in the Zapruder Film. Now we’ll never know now.
