Hoboken on This American Life

11/10/2008:

When you get a chance – you really ought to listen to this hour-long broadcast aired yesterday on “This American Life” (syndicated through WNYC radio – via Chicago Public Radio).

Who do you think you are?

“This week we bring you stories of privilege and the lengths some will go to to maintain it. In one story, a woman fights—on tape!—with her city’s parking enforcer about playing favorites. “

That woman, Kathy Mallow, was initially furious with how “B-List” movie actor Danny Aiello gets to illegally park his Jaguar day after day over at Tutta Pasta. And while she was speaking with the reporter – a Hoboken Parking Utility pickup also illegally parks near Buskers… It’s a fun listen!!

This city employee douchebag is a perfect candidate for a pink slip to help save money on the budget.
They should have said his tag number.

For some people, the fact that the HPU guy’s car extends into the crosswalk may seem like small potatoes. And probably, most of the time, it is.

Until, say, you are walking across the street with a small child, or a dog, or pushing your dad in a wheelchair, and your view is obstructed by that vehicle, and as a result, you or someone you love gets hit by a car.

There was an article in the New York Times this past Sunday about pedestrian fatalities in NJ. Guess what? It appears most of them happen…in crosswalks.
I have to agree with the HPU guy, it sounds like this woman has nothing better to do then go around harassing people with a tape recorder in hand. There are much more important issues in the world then who is parking where. people need to get their priorities in order.

The employees should be leading by example, especially now because the court mandated fiscal control office will see to it that they are held accountable. Again, it is a matter of supervision, from the top down. Directors, Dept. heads and supervisors have to be held accountable and responsible. 💡
