Reader Mail: Tax bill shock

10/31/2008:

Just got this email from a resident who was shocked to open their property tax bill this week:

Blindsided by the bill

“i hope and pray the wave of discontent toward our legislators extends to hoboken city government.

i just received my tax bill today and it’s $1,000 more THIS QUARTER than it was before.

there was no note or letter attached to the bill explaining anything.

this is outrageous. i feel completely blindsided. but i have myself to blame.

i am ordinarily quite cynical when it comes to politics. so when my city council person, beth mason, promised to lower taxes through a more transparent system, i thought, okay, lets give her a shot.

shame on me.”

Current policy for talking at council meetings is 5 mins.
If you prepare, you can give a good message lound and clear! Yes, you have to sign up but if you missed the SIGN IN sheets, permission is usually granted to speak. Speaking is one thing; getting this leadership to do something demands positive action which so far has been sorely missing. Perhaps, a crowd saying the same thing, lower taxes, do your job, STOP THE BS, will get change. In the final analysis, the election in May 09 for mayor and council at large will most probably be the necessary action TO REALLY AFFECT CHANGE AND SAVE THIS CITY. 💡
We need to organize a protest!

411, can you propose a few dates and let’s all vote on when/where?

… We need to show up to the Nov. 5th meeting, and give the council and the tax collector hell for this fiasco as well.

We need to make our voices heard, or we’re going to continue to suffer at the hands of these horrible politicians.
No need for 411 to prosose any dates for a protest. The dates to protest are already set, the next one is Nov 5th, as you pointed out. The council meets the 1st and 3rd Wed. of every month. You can go an gripe about anything you want for 3 mins at the end of these meetings, but you are supposed to sign up to do so before the meeting starts.
bmoc, then you must either live in a box by the river or in a 350sq ft POS because my taxes are over $11k per year before the hike, or obama’s socialist programs.
Actually you are quick to assume, as usual. I live in a fully renovated 750 sq ft apartment with patio on Garden Street. Granite counters, hardwood floors, all of that good stuff. My taxes were around $6k before the hike.

Don’t forget we need as the TAX COLLECTOR how he was able to add two illegal apartments and an illegal addition on his home to pay for this increase, yet WE HAVE TO EAT IT!
