One can also donate time to the shelter (which is always needed). Examples include helping to make lunches for the homeless, serving meals, etc.,.

Do you know where anyone interested in helping could find contact information to call and volunteer?

KS (a temporary lifting of my self-imposed posting ban), in addition to volunteer time, the shelter is also always looking for prepared meals. I cooked some easy entrées over the weekend and dropped them off and they were very appreciative. You can practice those pasta making skills and make some less fortunate people happy

why is it that the homeless cannot make their own lunches and serve meals? are they too busy ? why do volunteers have to come in to serve them? can’t they even serve food? if they are so psychotic that they cannot serve meals then they need to be institutionalized.

There actually are some shelters where the homeless work serving food and maintaining the facilities, but most homeless are indeed mentally imbalanced. So it is not a matter of having a full schedule, but insanity. And very frequently, the reason they are on the streets are because they are tossed out of mental hospitals for lack of funding.
Considering your usual disdain for humanity, I’m actually surprised that you are in favor of increased public spending for mental hospitals rather than volunteers donating their private time for free.

irish- I am not cooking for them. Hell, I’m not even volunteering. I’m passing that info along to someone else. KS, volunteer, HA!

I know KS, I know . . . you prefer the check writing variety of charity . . . but I can’t fault you for that. I’m more like the little drummer boy and have only my skills to offer

I don’t write checks either. I believe charity starts at home, and that God helps those who help themselves and all that type of thing.
MR- Nice video, I’m still laughing.

Katie needs to learn to cook, first.

KS, charity does start at home, this weekend it was my home. Even though I have modest means I still like to try and help out those that have less . . . anyway, ’tis the season. BTW, the entrée (pasta with a pancetta marinara) will feed about 30-40 and cost only 20 bucks to make– food costing at it’s best. I’ve included the recipe for the sauce in case you want to give it a try:
2 Tbsp. Olive oil
4 Tbsp. pancetta — small dice
1 large onion — small dice
2 carrots — minced
1 Tbsp. — dried thyme (or two fresh thyme)
2 to 4 cloves of garlic — thinly sliced
1/2 cup red or white wine (optional– I didn’t use for the shelter for obvious reasons)
2 cans San Marzano Tomatoes — hand crushed
2 Tbsp. Basil — chiffonade
Salt and Pepper
In a heavy bottomed pot over med. high heat add olive oil and pancetta. When pancetta begins to brown and has rendered its fat add onion, lower heat, and sweat. After five to seven minutes or so (when the onion becomes translucent) add the carrots, thyme, and garlic and cook for another five minutes or so, until ingredients start to become golden (don’t burn the garlic). Season with S & P at this point. Raise heat slightly and add the wine (deglaze). Cook until the wine reduces by about 2/3 and then add the tomatoes, stirring to incorporate all the ingredients. Bring to a boil and then reduced to a simmer for about 1 hour. Add basil at the end and check seasoning again. Adjust with S & P. You can serve as is or blend to make a smoother sauce. Bon Appetito . . .
