Reader Mail: Early bird street sweeper

Hoboken411 reader Mike is puzzled by the crack-of-dawn street sweeper activity…
WTF? Why so early?
“I experienced something interesting which I don’t believe I’ve seen before in the past 2 years that I’ve lived in Hoboken. There’s a chance that I have seen/heard it but simply didn’t think twice about it. What’s the story with street sweepers cleaning Washington at 6am? Lucky for me, I was awoken by one of these monstrosities the city calls “street sweeper” during today’s wee hours. Although my bedroom windows face Washington, they are sound proofed enough that loud noise “usually” doesn’t wake me up.

Posted on your site and on the city signs shows the odd side of Washington as being cleaned from 8am to 9am and the even side from 9am to 10am. What the heck is that thing doing there at 6am?
I’m not so much ticked off at the noise that it’s making at an ungodly hour, but the effectiveness of the actual cleaning. Although not 100% of the spots on Washington are taken before the 8am street cleaning, I would estimate that between 50-60% of the spots are in fact being used for overnight parking. This means that the street sweeper has to do one of those wide “get around the car” moves which just puts more garbage in the street (not even sure how that’s possible). Has the city ever explained the need for a 6am street sweeping on Washington if it’s happening again between 8-10am? Hate to go on a “my tax dollars are being wasted” rant but isn’t that what’s happening here? Based on the effectiveness of the 6am cleaning, I wouldn’t even call this “duplicated” work. More like wasted work.
Just thought I’d share .. perhaps you have some info you can share with us brave souls that call Washington their home. Back to sleep for me .. then again is there a point? That thing is coming back around again in the next hour.”

Street sweepers are supposed to sweep from the middle of the street out towards the curb. Its sorta similar to snow plowing.
On a wide street like Washington Street – they probably make a pass (or two) before the cars move to get rid of the dirt/sand/debris from the middle of the street so when the cars do move they can get the rest of it.
I don’t think the street sweepers pick up bulky/heavy stuff – that you need one of those vacu-tractors for. Hoboken doesn’t own any vacu-tractors; instead we have people using shovels and brooms pushing garbage cans on wheels to pick up the bigger pieces. The same people cleaning the sidewalks I guess.

The street sweepers have to work that early. Otherwise, the beer delivery trucks will double-park on top of trash.

So true!!!
Well……..has anyone ever seen the garbage men throwing the empty cans any which way they please? If you value your car don’t park it overnight on Washington

Just wanted to share that have you ever been in Hoboken when they’re trying to sweep Washington during business hours? MAYHEM!! Also like HOBOKENGOLF stated they start by getting the trash and junk from the middle of street to the curb where it is safer for the guys on foot with brooms and shovels to pick up whatever the 8-10am sweeper misses.
You should try living in Jersey City where the garbage trucks now come from 11pm-4am, you think a street sweeper the size of a Ford Explorer is noisy

All good answers ! I would also like to add , did you ever see how clean our streets are ? So, so what if they go a little early, i think it’s worth it. Comare Hoboken to any surrounding city. 411 take a ride up west new york, jersey city and union city in the mornings. “blah”
Idea 411 take some pic’s in those city’s and compare them to this city. Same time of the day, type of pic’s.

Wait, I thought we were supposed to be outraged that city employees don’t work long enough hours. So isn’t it a good thing they’re out doing their jobs already at 6am?

What does starting work early have to do with working long hours? You can still start early and have a short day. Just ask all those crossing guards how long there day is if you don’t believe me.

What is your beef with crossing guards? Really, the lowest paid worker in the city. they get what, $8/hr and they are only paid for the exact time on the corner. maybe 1-2 hours in the morning and then 1-2 hours in the afternoon. nothing in between. not matter if it’s pouring rain, snowing, hurricane winds or dodging tractor trailors, they help the kids walk to school. I don’t get why anyone would bash the crossing guards.

6am is not that early. the guys collecting the 10 trash cans of beer bottles on every block at 4am on sunday morning on 1st street are early.

yes, i’d take the 6am instead of the trash guys picking up at the dumpster outside my window at 3am everyday.

I’d like to compare Washington st. and Central ave in Jersey City and then compare bergaline ave which goes though West New York, North Bergan, Guttenberg and Union City . All at 7am and see who has the cleanest city’s . As a betting man i’d bet HOBOKEN .
Bottom line stop trying to b!tch about every little thing !!!
