Why are the playgrounds locked?

10/1/2008:

Most Hoboken residents are already frustrated with the lack of decent open space in town.

One Hoboken411 reader is now even more miffed that she can’t even take her kids to the playgrounds when they’re locked!

We can’t play anymore?

“On Saturday afternoon we tried going to the playgrounds at 3rd and Madison and at Jackson near 1st, and both were padlocked.

Does anyone know anything about this?”

More like a 12-foot fence, MidnightRacer. The hockey rink is closed supposedly because there’s no one to supervise it during the day. I understand closing at night — but this was in the middle of a weekend afternoon.

That doesn’t explain why the 11th & Willow basketball court is locked ALL weekend. It is one of the few healthy outlets available to teenagers in this town, but the Board of Ed keeps it shuttered. If you want to close at 9 PM or sundown, fine, but there’s no need to shut it in the middle of the day.

The park and playground at the Hoboken Housing Authority b/w 8th and 9th and Adams and Jefferson says “No Trespassing. Private Property.” So basically that public open space is always locked, unless you live in subsidized housing.

Did you call the parks department before you wrote to H411?
