TD Banknorth has plenty of money

9/30/2008:

Hoboken411 reader Mike caught this mini-construction site downtown today. Since TD Banknorth acquired Commerce Bank last year – they now feel it’s necessary to spend money on fixing their sidewalk signs… Good job!

Well, the Commerce red & blue are going fast. I passed by and the giant back wall is now Toronto-Dominion Bank green. Somehow, Canadian banks seem safer for what little money I have left after all these bailouts.
both of these bank buildings are beautiful, with the 101 washington obviously being much nicer since it wasn’t stripped of it’s original grandur and turned into a times sq painted whore like the newark street location. i hope that TD takes down all 28 of the COMMERCE BANK signs that the Hoboken Historical board at city hall approved. christ, castellano is useless…
While 101 Washington may have great structural bones, the interior is one of the worst I’ve ever encountered in bank. When I first walked in, I almost walked out. All the mismatched furnishings were ca. 1960, the PCs were 1985, haphazard camera wires hanging like Xmas lights all over the place, teller windows on two opposite sides with two separate lines, pigeon poop and nests over the ATMs, very depressing remnant of legacy HUB.

However, in spite of the dreary environment, the workers are courteous, professional and responsive. When I complained about the nests and pigeons bombing customers over the ATMs, the following week they were pigeon-proofed.

“Removing the C” is a big part of the re-branding. This is going to be expensive, since Commerce Bank incorporated the “C” logo into many architectural details, down to the radiator grills and heating duct covers. Some branches I have seen have frosted glass with a “C” in it, all of which will need to be replaced.

Maybe the ubiquitous C was supposed to be a poison pill against a takeover… 🙄
