Mookie Remembered

A large crowd of friends and family gathered dedicated a tree the memory of Ismar “Mookie” Mineros Wednesday, September 10, 2008.

Mineros was shot three times on February 17, 2006 near 5th and Jackson.

The 18-year old Hoboken High School Senior was living on Willow Avenue at the time of his death. Two men with criminal records were charged with the murder. The newly planted tree in his memory stands north of the Hoboken Housing Authority baseball field. Several members of the City Council and the Hoboken Police Department were also on hand to pay their respects.

His family lived across the street. It was wrenching to see the memorial outside the building. I didn’t know him, but the grief was palpable at the corner store for a long time after–they’d all seen him grow up. One of the young women who works at the fruit and veg stand at the PATH station was really close to him.

It’s nice that they are planting a tree for this kid. If I’m not mistaken, he was the one who tried to break up a fight and ended up getting shot for his trouble? In any event, it makes me sad to hear about the loss of such a young life.
