9/7/2008:
In case some of you didn’t know, besides the food, bands and fireworks, the big tradition of the annual Hoboken Italian Festival is the carrying of the Madonna Dei Martiri statue all around town.
Here’s a photo that Furey took today of the procession walking up First Street. You can see the rest of his pictures on his Flickr Account.

Oh, and here’s a video of how they do it in Italy:

it’s nice to see reminders of hope that our society hasn’t completely become a Blackberry-slaving, vapid wasteland of disconnectedness by seeing the preservation as here, of old country traditions. great story.

i love the way they dont shut down streets, they just move right into traffic.
I’m not being sarcastic either….i like they way the parade just becomes part of the everyday flow

Yeah, it’s real great…let’s move a huge-ass procession at a snail’s pace through the streets of Hoboken. Good idea.

i think you can cope for a few days. with all the problems in hoboken, why should this really be considered that big a deal. it’s important to maintain traditions. with the way this county is going, pretty soon we’re all going to be speaking spanish if we don’t remember our past as this festival does.
