Tropics heating up

9/2/2008:

With Hurricane Gustav not being as bad as they predicted, doesn’t mean that you should stop paying attention to the activity in the tropics.

As you can see from this image below, there is lots of action in the Atlantic.

Tropical Storm Hanna is expected to become a Cat1 or Cat2 Hurricane in the next day or so, and one forecaster is predicting (or as I’d like to call “guesstimating”) that they system may eventually hit the NYC Metro area and pummel us with tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain by this weekend. We’ll see how good they are.

Also in the tropics is Tropical Storm Ike, which models are showing heading into the Gulf of Mexico. Following that is Tropical Storm “Josephine” which just reached TS status.

Am I the only one that finds this stuff fascinating?

Honestly – I think the best resource to figure out what is going on with any of these storms is to go online to http://nhc.noaa.gov on each of the pages about the storms, there’s a text link to discussion. This is what the forecaster is thinking about and what he estimates based on what he is seeing. It’s a different read than any of the other alerts. The media plays up these storms for good reason – the fact that they can and are life threatening and they are the only ones who probably will convince 90% of the public that being where they are now is just bad. From what I understand from reports from my people in Texas and in LA working Gustav is that they are now going to be re-assigned and are preparing for Hanna – treating it as a “category 3” landfall. I think this is a bit much based on what the forecast calls for. Example:
HOWEVER…GIVEN THE PRESENT LACK OF ORGANIZATION…IT IS DIFFICULT TO KNOW HOW MUCH STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE. THE NEW OFFICIAL FORECAST IS LOWER THAN THE PREVIOUS ADVISORY BUT SHOWS HANNA BECOMING A CATEGORY ONE HURRICANE IN ABOUT 36 HOURS. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THIS IS A LOW CONFIDENCE FORECAST. IN FACT…IF ONE CONSULTS THE WIND SPEED PROBABILITY PRODUCT INCLUDED IN THIS PACKAGE…IT CAN BE SEEN THAT THERE IS NEARLY AN EQUAL PROBABILITY OF HANNA BEING A TROPICAL STORM OR HURRICANE AT DAY 3.
Quickly followed up by the point:… Read more »

These storms do not exist. They are an elitist hippy socialist fantasy.
