Hoboken schools open Wednesday

9/1/2008:

This Wednesday, September 3rd is the official (dreaded) end of summer for kids attending Hoboken public schools, where they return to (gasp!) learn new things.

No more middle schools and other changes

The Board of Education restructured the school district, by eliminating the middle schools and rolling them into the primary schools. Calabro, Connors and Wallace schools are now kindergarten through eighth grades.

Brandt School has been converted to an early childhood facility, and Demarest School has an alternative high school vocational program as well at the Hoboken Charter School.

Additionally, many positive curriculum changes have been made. You can catch up with them by subscribing to the Hoboken Curriculum Project blog published by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Anthony Petrosino.

Those are most likely the parents of the out-of-town kids blocking your driveway. Hoboken has 300 such students in the schools–out of a total enrollment of a little over 2,000–and most are dropped off in cars or bused in. Virtually all are enrolled here illegally–with local pols and the HS football coaches paving the way for many of them and school officials doing their best to ignore it. The cost to us taxpayers: more than $7 million year (at $25,000 per student).

Ahh – the joy of trying to get out of our driveway and having the entire street filled with double parked mini vans dropping off their children. Note to Moms – it is a mile square town – try walking. If not then please don’t be upset when I give you the stink eye for blocking my driveway. Happy first day of school everyone! Let the fun begin 😛

My favorite time of the year – back to these wannabe thungs hanging around after class is dismissed since they have nothing better to do. 👿

Dreaded is right! An entirely accurate picture of what your young child has to look forward to:

Yes….the Abbott program (preschool for 3 and 4’s) starts tomorrow Sept. 2nd (half day), and the rest of the public schools start Wednesday. You are correct in your post.
