Hoboken parking offenders immortalized

8/20/2008:

Whenever I see this Hoboken mural at the 8th Street Tavern, I always think “gosh, that sure makes me dizzy!”

However, after actually paying more attention, it dawned upon me that this artist permanently captured one of Hoboken’s biggest problems: Cars blocking intersections. Naturally, it’s a Hoboken Police car. Genius!

There’s where we know your vision is just your imagination. Booting vehicles in Hoboken is a recent development, circa Dave Roberts and John Corea’s regime.

Then the whole bar breaks out and sings,

“Xanadu your neon lights will shine. For you Xanadu-oo-oo”

That’s a cool mural. When I stand in front of it and stare into its otherworldly truthiness, I feel like I’m back in the early 80’s. I stare and see a cop coming out of the police car in roller skates. I see my car getting booted by mean tow truck drivers who are also wearing roller skates. I see the lords of this otherworldly realm judge me at a colorful City Hall, they don’t like me, and so ban me to Weehawken, NJ.

Then I wake up and order another Yuengling.

Twenty-some years ago it was called “Charlie’s”. Anyone remember it back then? Frozen mugs of beer, 50 cents. Smoke all the cigarettes you wanted, at the bar, nobody cared. There was a guy who would show up on weekends. He had a German Shepherd. When you were ready to go home, the guy would send his dog out with you. The dog would walk you until you reached your door, then head back to Charlie’s. It was wild. Especially when you had way to many mugs of beer.
