8/6/2008:
Here’s a (sad) update to the earlier water main break post.
It seems as if the Jeep that was originally parked only 25 feet from the gaping hole in the street, drove straight into it!
Several Hoboken411 readers sent in pictures:

How does this happen?
Still half asleep?
On cell phone, fiddling with iPod, and sipping double-latte from Starbucks?
The Loch Ness monster?

Hey, is that Kelly and Tiffany in picture #5 from the new set of photos? The shot of the ladies looking at their Jeep is just begging for a caption contest.

I was there and the girl driving the Jeep said she just wasn’t paying attention.

Shouldn’t the area have been roped off in the first place? No doubt the driver is an idiot for not noticing it, but you have to put some blame on the officials for not putting anything around it.

You might just be right. Look at photo #5 of 6 and notice that the hole is at the end of a patch job the union did (perpendicular direction to road) to cover some kind of pipe work underneath.
Then, look at photo #4 of 6 to notice the sharper angular breaks in the hole which really looks like it collapse (fractured) under the Jeep’s weight. Doesn’t look like your typical rain worn hole. Looks like it happened rather suddenly. Had to be a cavity underneath. Makes you have more caution when driving over these patches around town. Beware.

i dunno, i looked at the hole before and after, looks like the jeep just drove too close to it and got sucked in.

Ah, there’s a photo at the bottom (missed that one). OK, the driver sucked, or was making a break for China to attend the Olympics.
There’s another issue here though. We know that the unions worked on something underneath that crappy patch job. We know there’s a cavity underneath that patch job. Is the city responsible for damage to peoples’ cars when the unions perform such crappy work?

it has nothing to do with unions, it was just crappy work period, so the city would be responsible for the damage to the car though. likewise, if you damage your car on a pothole, you can file a claim with the city or the state. there’s a process for that.
i feel sorry for this person, but i feel like they should have seen the hole (unless it happened when the street was still water filled) and not driven into it.

Someone behind the wheel in Hoboken not paying attention? I’m shocked. Shocked and appalled.

add this to the female SUV driver stereotype justification.
was it a really short woman?
(not saying men don’t do stupid things either, just think it’s funny).

“Like I just drove out. Oh My Gawd. Like this hole came out of nowhere like you know. My car was like whatever it can make it. Then my sandals like so slippery and I just kinda hit the wrong thing. Not that brake thing but what’s the other thing? Then we were like oh my gawd we are like so going to die” - should this be in Overheard in Hoboken section?

Add the word like at least 20 more times and then it will be a dead ringer for any conversation coming from the mouth of a 20 something girl on the PATH.
