Accident prevention tips

7/30/2008:

As a friendly reminder about “how to drive” (in Hoboken and beyond), here are some helpful hints.

Common sense says:

 • Pay attention to your surroundings, the road and other drivers.
 • Limit distractions. Phone, iPod, donuts, coffee, etc.
 • Don’t tailgate! Leave a safe distance between you and the person ahead of you.
 • What’s the hurry? Drive at a relaxed pace, it will give you more time to react.

At least three of these four cars involved in this minor fender-bender (or what HPD called “a four-car pileup”) on 11th and Hudson Streets need a refresher course! Happened about 30 minutes in the past.

There’s a DMV in JC on Summit Ave that opens early on saturday mornings. I think they open at 8am, I get there at 7:30am-7:45am and am one of the first few in line.

I’ve renewed my license there twice and have been inand out in under 40 mins which shocked me. It was fantastic.

You have people who possibly got their licenses when they were 16 or 17 and here it is maybe 20, 40 or even 60 years later. They are allowed to operate a potentially lethal weapon with no refresher courses ever required. Most of the people who drive in this town (this country) have no idea what the rule is for stopping at stop signs, for yielding to pedestrians, the speed limit in school zones, etc. When I got my license I was 17, I had perfect vision. Now, without my glasses, everything is one big blurr. However, my driver’s license still says I can drive without glasses. I go every four years to get my license renewed. I get a new picture and everything. But do they give me an eye test. Hell No!
Really, no refresher tests at the DMV? 😯 I’m coming up for my first NJ drivers license renewal this year. You mean I don’t have to pass a new written exam to get a renewal? We had to in CA, and they especially included recently changed traffic laws on the test to catch you, so we had to make sure we read the whole booklet.
It took over 2 hours to get my license renewed last month at the MVC in Lodi. The place was so crowded that the fire marshal was there and only letting people in when an equal… Read more »
the real problem is that younger drivers (18-25yrs old) have very limited attention spans. they cannot concentrate on any given task for more than 3-5 minutes. they should not be permitted to operate motor vehicles.
I was going to respond to this post but then … ooo look at that over there. Shiny.
homeworld – the Bayonne station (right off 440 on the JC border) is really quick. If you get there right at 8 when it opens you will be out of there in no time.
Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind for 2012.
