Reader Mail: Women’s Shoes

7/25/2008:

Today’s Hoboken411 reader mail segment comes from Mel P.

She has a question for all the male readers out there about “shoes”:

Does it matter what I have on my feet?

hoboken-ladies-shoes-reader-poll.jpg“As a female I LOVE shoes. I like to coordinate different colors and styles to my outfits, and I get really excited when I hit a sale. Sometimes (but not often), if they’re on sale, I’ll even buy shoes that I don’t have any outfits for at that moment because I know that I’ll be able to coordinate them to something at a later date (only classic styles of course). Lately, I’ve found myself on endless.com because of their free overnight shipping policy, and I’ve bought a lot of shoes (about 5 pairs in 3 weeks).

Which brings me to my question – Do men even notice our shoes? I mean, does a woman wearing really adorable pumps, clogs, ballet slippers, stilettos, boots or platforms even register on a man’s radar? Do you guys even notice that we’ve taken the time to coordinate our blue & white striped pants with a blue and white shoe? If you do notice, do you care? Or is it that we’re wearing shoes for other females to notice and comment upon?

Basically my question is – Am I wasting my time/money with the shoe effort?

THANKS!!”

I’m a dude who definitely notices shoes. Especially in the summer when the women of Hoboken are exposing their beautiful toes. I’m more likely to notice the pedicure though. The frame of a good shoe and well maintained nails always makes a woman’s feet look better.

Thanks, terence and Katie. I have a wide foot and find that sometimes shoes labeled “wide” can be too narrow while shoes labeled “medium” fit fine. For that reason, I’ve been reluctant to order on line. However, it sounds like Zappos makes it easy to return them. I’ll look into them.
For those of you who order shoes on line…when you get them do you find that they always fit properly or do you sometimes have to send them back? Just asking because I’ve always been reluctant to order shoes that way in case they don’t fit. It seems like it would be a hassle to send them back.
I buy brands where I know my size and never have a problem. Generally I wear a 7.5, but if I buy huge heels or something, I’ll go up to an 8 just in case they run small. I’ve never had to return shoes. I’ve probably bought 20-30 pairs of shoes online.

I order most of my shoes online b/c I have narrow feet. Zappos is great. Often, the shoes show up the next day, I try them on and, if I don’t want to keep them, I log in, print out the return label (UPS or USPS are available options) and walk them to the post office. You can even put them in the big package bin and not wait to hand to the post office employee. I’ve done this for years and may send back 80% of what I order b/c of fit, comfort, etc. Shipping is free both ways. I’ve also ordered from Nordstrom online. It’s a little slower and you pay shipping.
