After several e-mails and voice-mails this contractor does not return phone calls.

If you need your stairs in your old brownstone either repaired or rebuilt, Marty Anderson is the one to go to. It ain’t cheap, but your stairs will never creak again. He clearly has a lot of expertise in the stair department.

Marty and two of his employees installed built-ins at my new construction condo toward the end of 2007. From Marty’s quick response to my initial inquiry to design, off-site fabrication and installation, I found everything about his process to be speedy, professional and high quality. His workers were very nice (important since I am home all day with two babies) and good at their jobs. I don’t know how much people are expecting to pay for custom built-in units, but I do know the cost was about half what friends of mine paid in NYC.

i hired Marty and here is my opinion. He is a very experienced craftsman and also has the added value of being able to do restoration on custom staircases or new installations. that a good thing, he’s very talented! but also expensive as you can imagine. but, that’s the price of good people. unfortuntely great craftsmen are not always great business operators and in this case i found some of his employees lacking. this is unfortunate because this sometimes means Marty as to come back and repair work that was done improperly by one of his carpenters. this is true of all businesses that involve craftsmen, but because of the incredible expense and time required to work with these guys it can be a disaster if there is a screwup. if Marty is doing all the work personally you’ll get solid results at a bit of a high price. if he’s doing 3-4-5 jobs at the same time you could get frustrated.

I would not recommend this guy at all. He came to my apartment probably a month and a half ago so I could get an estimate for some relatively simple carpentry work. Aside from being late to the appointment, he was very professional while he was there. But, I haven’t heard from him since. He won’t return multiple phone calls or emails. Unless this guy’s rolling in stair repair money, I don’t understand why he wouldn’t want work. In the end, if this is indicative of how he gets a job down, I wouldn’t use him.
