Weird Hoboken Buildings

7/10/2008:

Boy, I’m really catching up on some reader mail today!

This Hoboken411 reader has a few questions about a couple buildings in town:

What a weird place

“I’ve lived in Hoboken for three years now and have always wondered what that weird building is on Bloomfield Street between 1st and 2nd (closer to second on the east side). I’ve attached a picture. It looks like a really weird place, there are signs that say “absolutely no loitering, violators will be arrested” and “this area is under police surveillance”

Every time I walk by it I wonder what the hell goes on in there. It looks like some of the windows are boarded up but others have AC units in them. There’s also a large sign that says shaftway.”

He also wants to know if the self storage place on 8th and Adams used to be a school:

Weird NJ Party

Speaking of weird, for those that are fans of the magazine Weird N.J. might want to head over to Calaloo Cafe in Morristown on Saturday July 26th. The publishers of the eclectic magazine, Mark Sceurman and Mark Moran, are releasing a Weird New Jersey Special Issue and having the release party at 8pm.

Here’s the promo video for all you weirdos!
There is a house on park ave ,618 or 616??, I don’t think its 10 ft wide. Also in the same area there is a garage and set back house that use to be a dairy,620??, and behind 622&624 park there is a wall with iron rings where they tied the horses,at least they were there when i was growing up.
The guy that lives there is a hippie pot head who lied a couple years ago and claimed he wrote the play Hair to try and get laid. His story failed and he has since became a hermit!

one of the garages is used by the hot dog guy from columbus park to store his cart in.

also, there’s a horseshoe embedded in the sidewalk there. wonder if those garages were stables back when. they have that look.
The horseshoe was put there many years ago by the owners of the building who are old school Italians that used the shoe as a sign of luck for the property. It was common place to cement a horseshoe in the ground if you were from the old country in a way to bless the property of sorts.

you’d be shocked, especially if you bought one. yeah, they’ve been remediated, and there are WMD’s in Iraq also. how can anyone ever trust the government to even tell them what time it is.
