I don’t know that street closings are archaic, they seem to be happening equally in current times as any other time. But, like I said, every street fair, bar, restaurant, train station, fog horn, ambulance route…whatever, is under someones elses window. Like KS says, it’s not a secret when the festivals and feasts are. Should we stop all activity on Wachingotn because someone lives there NOW but forgot to ask the realtor some simple quesitons.
A feel bad for the guy. Sure it sucks a few days a year. I hate the St Patricks Day vomit fest yet every year I’m told to suck it up. So, suck it up. it’s the price we pay for a diverse community.

Yes or no: The festival has probably evolved in the last 98 years from what it was in 1910?
If yes, then:
Yes or no: The evolution of the festival was probably caused by the continued diversification of Hoboken (the church, the use of the nearby land and new neighbors)?
Yes or no: Asking the Church to compromise with the neighbors on the use of their garage or finding them alternate parking (such as allowing them street parking with the vendors until the fair shuts down at night?) is acceptable?
Yes or no: Compromising on the start/end time of the fair is acceptable?
I mean, come on here.
If you dare to say no to question one, I’m going to have to ask you to prove that in 1910 the fair and the neighborhood looked exactly as it does today - including a full picture of all the venders lined up on the streets under the electric street lights with teh band stand going until 11pm.

I live next to the festival, and the only inconvenience I’ve suffered is that I had to drive down 5th St. instead of 7th since the road is closed.
The music doesn’t bother me either, because my windows are closed since it’s hot out, and the AC is on.
Now let me go buy some sheets and zeppoles.

But when you go house hunting, you can see where everything is. And if you see a bar or restaurant and you move there, you know what you are getting into. Not true of some random street closure for a festival where they sell carnie food b/c the church needs to raise money to cover the budget. How could anyone ever predict that? The vast majority of churches never do stuff like that. They raise their money from parishoners & the occassional pot luck dinner, raffle or charity auction. In normal circumstances, I would even be encouraged that my neighbor was a church………though clearly not this church. I’d rather live next to a liquor store.
Honestly, I wouldn’t be all that worked up about this if the priest hadn’t gotten on the loudspeaker and basically told the neighbors to go f*ck off during his sermon. If he had instead just spent a couple hundred bucks for temp tags for the inconvenienced residents (like any self-respecting priest I know would), this would all be a non-issue in my mind.

KS. It is much smaller now than it used to be. At least 20-30 years ago.
Matt. Correct as always. No one would ever think to ask about events and festivals. I defer to your infanite wisdom.

That’s the only change? Come on. Look at my list. How can the neighborhood not have a sit down with the church and work this out.

Who’s being unreasonable? Let’s see…
Blocking someone from using their private garages is illegal - cars are towed away for this, unless it’s a official city event (in which the city would accommodate the owners). You support doing this to the residents for a week, that they should find parking elsewhere like everyone else, and you think they’re being unreasonable?
According to jefstathiou’s account of city records, the private group (church) pays nothing (FREE) to grab the residential street away from residents.
According to danzig, those vendor spots go for $50,000 - which goes into the pockets of those private groups who paid nothing for the streets.
Yes, neighborhood festivals which are non monetary are a tradition.
No, a private group taking away public parking and selling it off for a lot of money to other people is NOT a tradition. It’s a (well, I’m not going to say).
You support allowing this ‘tradition’ of fleecing the public and selling off their property usage, and then you ask who’s being unreasonable?
What is reasonable is being good neighbors. What is reasonable is going by the same rules everyone else goes by. What is reasonable is cutting off loud music and sounds at 10pm in residential zones. This is the whole reason why it should be moved into the park. That way, you could actually go later into the night. How can you ask the public to be accommodating to allow the private group to re-sell public property for $50,000 a spot on large sections of residential streets you don’t even own?

Well said Foster —– I see matt ” 1st team all state hoboken 411 poster ” is at at again. Busy bee! sitting in front of his 3 computer screens , phone conferencing. I have to ask this question though …. Do you Matt live along any of the streets the feast is using>? If you are not, are you some sort of blogging superhero? standing up for the rights of fellow anonymous posters! Do you wear a cape in your office? ——Also , I can agree with the parking situation….HOWEVER , his post listed his 5 whiney complaints of why it sucks to be him. “oh the garbage…Oh the noise…Oh the beer garden ” If his only complaint was the parking, it would be completly understandable. Being a whiney assburglar is another story.
PS : No one who moves into a new diverse URBAN area should ever know every single detail about their new residence. However let’s turn on the common sense-o-meter….hmmm I’m moving into a mile square city packed with roughly 50 -60 thousand people…..I MAY BE inconvenienced from time to time…don’t you think. Maybe there shouldn’t be any traffic on the streets when you drive to work and no lines at the post office on river rd. I live in this town and I wish I didn’t have to hear a handful of anal little whiney chronic complaining miserable unsatisfied pricks on a daily basis. Critisizing everything this city is and has to offer. YOU CAN LIVE ANY WHERE YOU WANT! if You want to live in this perfect Utopia , build it! you can be mayor!

sorry - forgot to type the word “thread” after “curiosities”
112. matt_72 | July 24th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
And no one closes a road for a whole week in an urban area where people need access to their garages either. That just defies common sense. But what would a jailbird know about common sense.

One of the Feast used to shoot off really loud cannons a few nights a week. They stopped that becasue the neighbors complained.

Strongly advise any one who is going to bring a can of OFF, especially for the kids…. I use “smooth and dry” (does not spray or smell) but apparently I did not use enough last night. I was bit by something and my entire eye is swollen. The mosquito’s are horrific this year and in full force especially with all the stale liquor and food hanging around as the feast progresses.
