NJ Transit scam?

6/18/2008:

Last week, when the PATH train went out of service for over half a day, the other transportation options were supposed to honor the PATH cards.

One Hoboken411 reader heard about some people getting shafted by NJ Transit:

NJT Driver Scam?

“Last week, with the PATH out of commission, a friend of mine took the bus back to Hoboken from Port Authority. NJ Transit was supposed to be honoring PATH tickets and cards, as far as know. When my friend got on the bus the driver would not honor his PATH card. My friend really didn’t care and was willing to pay. (just wanted to get home and out of the heat) He asked the driver how much the fare was and the driver told him $3.50. As far as I know, the fare is $2.55. My friend only had $3 and the driver was not going to let him on! A nice person behind him on line gave him 50 cents. Is this driver serious? Was he ripping people off all day who did not know better? He should be fired for pulling moves like that!”

Did anyone else encounter a problem similar to this on the NJ Transit Buses?

Get some millage out of your complaints – If everyone complains directly to NJT you might see something productive done.

The just launched their “Rider’s Platform” meant to be a soapbox for riders. So please go ahead and voice your concerns where Transit is listening.

a friend of mine made a good point – hoboken has the shittiest buses because it’s the shortest ride. the older buses basically get retired to the hoboken terminal line. these buses can’t go on the highways, so they aren’t going out further than hoboken. he rides the jc heights bus and has the same complains as the 126 riders. not saying it’s right, but someone has to ride the older buses…

As someone who happens to work in the bus industry i feel the need to stick up for the bus driver. First off it is not a high paying job, starting pay for most private companies{coach, acadamey, ny waterway} average between $11-$12 an hour. Most driver`s have to work a split shift, no fun, listen to passengers ring that damn buzzer hundreds of times a day. If somebody already signaled a stop no need for three more people to follow, and deal with the general aggrevation of traffic. Anybody who has had a job that requires dealing with the general public on a daily basis know what a bitch that can be, a little hello or good morning goes a long way. One last thing the last thing a driver wants to do is spend 8hrs on a bus with no a/c, if it`s not working it`s not their fault, they just drive the bus they are assigned. My suggestion is to get the bus number and the operating company and report to NJDOT, they will take care of it.

What is really the big scam is how disgustingly hot the 126 buses are. The lack of air conditioning is deplorable and on some buses when the air is actually turned on, some blow hot air. I know I’ve seen posts on 411 about this recently, and I’ve taken the bus for years now, but this summer seems to be the worst.

For example, the other day, my bus was pulled over by a cop outside the tunnel for doing 60 in a 25mph zone. The driver’s excuse to the cop:? He was speeding b/c the air wasn’t working and he needed to vent the bus with all the windows opened. So my question is: Is it just the 126 line that gets the crappiest buses?

Fair point. I rarely take the bus because I’m much closer to the PATH on both sides of the river, but some of the drivers I’ve encountered … wow. Just kill yourself already.
so what are all of these “encounters” with bus drivers people are talking about? i get on the bus, hand the person my ticket, smile and say hello, and go to my seat. is there some other interaction i am missing out on?
I think a lot of people have voices in their head and serious relationship issues.
