All Hands on Deck

A Harbor Education Program

On May 19, Mrs. Killen’s 5th grade class from Hoboken’s Wallace School climbed aboard a New York Water Taxi for an interactive, fully guided tour of the NY/NJ Harbor. Only ten of these field trips are offered each year by the NJ Marine Sciences Consortium and the NJDOT Office of Maritime Resources. Miss Wingert, one of Wallace School’s Science teachers, submitted the application and was lucky enough to be selected to bring a class. The students saw first hand why the NY/NJ Harbor is a world class port and how the port’s commercial activities enrich everyone’s lives, including their own.

During the trip the students met some of the wildlife that lives in and near the harbor. They learned about imports and exports and saw container ships from all over the world. On the way back everyone used his or her “sea legs” to go to the top deck where they got a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty.
Wow, what a great way for kids to learn about the real world! Now how could we make it easier for Hoboken school kids to actually hop on a boat HERE IN HOBOKEN?
I bet they left from the ferry slip or something. I can’t imagine they would bring them all over to NYC just to board a water taxi.

Looks like a great trip! My 5th grade fields trips were nothing like that!
