Severe storm watch today

5/27/2008 6pm Update:

Freaky winds, transformer explosions

About 45 min in the past, there were some swirling winds that caused a transformer explosion, and various power outages uptown (Maxwell Place), and along Sinatra Drive.

5/27/2008:

Hudson County is under a “severe storm watch” this afternoon.

From the looks of the radar, the storms seem spread out, making them “hit or miss.”
Yeah, let’s all run and hide under the bed when it gets windy.
nobody said hide under the bed, but most people would agree that standing directly UNDER (and on damp ground to boot) high voltage feeder wires that clearly have lost tension and are swinging violently and ARCING is not a wise idea.

And for the record that is not a transformer that exploded, that would have involved a fire and depending on the xformer possibly the release of PCB’s and a big cleanup. That ‘boom’ was just the feeder arcing over to ground when one of the conductors came into contact w/ something at ground potential.

Same kind of person who would stick their head into a gas oven and light a match to figure out why the pilot light was out.

whomever took that video is a Darwin Award in the making.

Do you realize that if one of those feeders came down, on wet/damp ground you and your dogs would have been a pile of charcoal?
