Is this your birdie?
“Hi 411,
This little bird ended up on our back porch this morning. We were able to coax it into a cage with food. It is clearly someone’s lost pet. Could you please post it and they can contact us at julie@harariville.com“

On two separate occassions, I have seen loose parakeets in Hoboken (one blue and white and one yellow and white). Both times were near the corner of 1st and Jackson. The first time I saw one, I actually called animal services (no answer/response) to see if they could catch it. I also walked around asking neighbors if they had lost a pet. A police officer saw me and stopped to help - went to the pet store on the corner and got some bird seed… all to no avail. We could not catch it and it was clear that it did not have clipped wings (as a pet would) b/c it flew up into a tree.
The second time I saw one (a few weeks later), I realized that it couldn’t just be a coincidence and that this bird was likley also not someone’s pet. My question is: what is going on with parakeets “in the wild” in Hoboken? Has anyone else seen wild parakeets? I truly think that both of those birds “escaped” or were purposely released from the pet store on the corner of Newark and 1st St.
I just don’t see how else there could have been 2 parakeets on the same corner that were lost pets.

There is a Parrot colony in Edgewater just past Trader Joe’s. They are nesting in the trees and in the bank sign. Apparently they can survive the winter

That is so strange. I found a parakeet on 1st and Jackson about 3 years ago. I took it in till I found a home for it.

The urban Edgewater parrots seem to be getting sidetracked a lot this year…

FYI, that’s not a budgie. Budgie is short for budgerigar which is a type of parakeet. That is some kind of finch.

That’s a finch, not a parakeet or a budgee.
