Raft deflates in Hudson

4/20/2008:

With all the debris in the Hudson, it probably isn’t a good idea to use an inflatable raft to boat around. 10 minutes in the past, a few people were on a “deflating raft in distress” on the river, near Sinatra Park.

Authorities have responded and seem to have them “secured” at the moment and will hoist them to dry land shortly.

Inflatable rafts are not for open water. Down right dangerous. They don’t cut the water at all and a strong wind esp in the hudson will sail you right out of town quick.

They are gliders, to lay on top of water, great for rafting in a stream……as you know what direction the water is flowing.

I was out walking the dog this morning at about 10:30 and I looked down at the beach area by Maxwell Place Two guys were siting over an inflatable kayak and seemed to be struggling with the instructions. I feel badly for them (I’m guessing they’re the same guys in your post) but I have to say my first reaction was…wow, that can’t be good!

they had an NYPD helicopter circling around, and an NYPD boat. I t may have been there, but I did not see the Hoboken police boat (bunch of fire trucks on sinatra drive though).

(we still have a police boat, right?)
