Reader Mail: Exterminators

4/23/2008:

From what I know, there’s only a handful of pest-control or exterminating companies in Hoboken. One reader would like a recommendation:

“What is the average price for extermination in a brownstone or apartment? I need to find a service in hoboken and want to try and avoid getting ripped off..”

Hi I own brownstone pest control and as an experienced exterminator of many years I could say that in pest control the prices vary depending on who’s doing the work and in some cases with reason. I’ve seen prices from $75 all the way up to $295 for one apartment treated for mice, clean out, which is what we call the initial treatment. The difference in price could be: 1.distance, how long will travel time be to get to the location and find parking? In Hoboken a special consideration, not all companies are local. 2. promotion, what percentage of the job earned goes to advertising. 3. Time, how long will the service man take to complete the job? This one is the most important. I know that for mice it takes me about one hour and some times more to complete a job. The looking for opening where they could be coming in from alone could take 15 minutes or more then we also take the time to plug up the openings if we can. Some openings require a sheet-rock man to repair. This can’t be rushed. The placement of traps and material all takes time. At Brownstone Pest Control we charge $150 for the job but also give a three month guarantee. I hope this helps. for more info: brownstonepestcontrol.com

I’ve used Brownstone Pest Control twice now, three years ago for bedbugs and that was a nightmare before Brownstone came in and took care of it. Then right after Sandy we had mice and they took care of that, showed me a hole in back of the stove where the gas line comes out of the wall that had to be plugged up. The buildings uses another exteminating company but there exterminator had never mentioned the opening in the wall, so we had the same problem for 4 weeks until I decided to call Brownstone again, and that was that no problems so far.

No, no run-in with bed bugs but I did see a story on the news about it too. Just curious, what preventative measures are you taking?
well, i went to target and bought vinyl mattress covers to put on my box spring and my mattress. i think the primary place they get into is the box spring, so i’d do at least that. the cover was only $11 for a queen. they sell nicer cloth covers for prevention, but they are around $80. if you have a mattress pad or cover that goes under your fitted sheet, you can’t even tell the vinyl is on the bed. though it does make the bed a little “warmer”. the cover also serves the purpose of killing dust mites. i’ve noticed my bedroom isn’t as dusty since i started using them. aside from that, there’s not much else you can do.
