Hoboken PD hires SWAT party boy

4/3/2008:

I wasn’t going to bother with this story, but after someone suggested I do, I said why not.

Underage drinking gets you hired by police

Josue Velez (who is now 22) was of over a dozen new recruits added to the Hoboken police force this year. He had accompanied “SWAT” party-ers officers down to Louisiana in 2005 and 2006 as an “EMT,” but was seen posing with “chicks with guns” and doing shots at bars, and so on.

Nine of the officers who were involved with the SWAT trips were charged in one way or another with bad behavior, including Lt. Andriani was suspended.

Why was he hired?

Public Safety director Bill Bergin said that Velez was just a “civilian” during these trips and didn’t violate any regulations, and the PBA president said it’s routine to include an EMT on “missions” such as this in case a team member is injured (or hungover.) Another cop said they didn’t need an EMT, since one SWAT team member was already a certified EMT…

The question here is simple. Why would a person, who essentially did the same things that got nine cops in trouble, get hired? What kind of example is that? You tell me what’s missing here.

Bad behavior, agreed. But I am more willing to cut this kid a break that I am to the adults that organized the party. He was 19 or 20 at the time and wanted to be hired as a police officer, so I would not have expected him to question what the senior officers were doing.

Hopefully he has learned from this experience and from being on the front lines in Iraq and can make better decisions now, even if it is to just stay away from the camera when you have had a few drinks.

Granted in this situation the guy should have not been hired in the first place as a result of this incident….so needless to say I was surprised that he was interviewed in the press about his possible termination……

Is this why the cops deserve raises?
