The Beach Boys
Did you know how great The Beach Boys were?
We all essentially have the same amount of time in our lives to listen to music (i.e., you can’t really listen to and enjoy more than one song at a time). As a result, this pretty much limits the amount to can enjoy music that appeals to you. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t make fairly amazing discoveries years, if not decades after the fact. The Beach Boys are one fine example.
Growing up (and still to this day) we peruse(d) and absorb(ed) entire catalogs of many bands – Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Van Halen, Rush, The Police and many more. And while we were “familiar” with The Beach Boys – it was limited to what we heard on the radio (their “surf music” sound). I never knew them to be such sophisticated artists. I read an article recently about their legacy – and was intrigued enough to go down the rabbit hole to find out more.
These guys were really musical geniuses. (I bought the 174 track “Made in California” box set to add to my collection, too). Even bands such as the Beatles might have “nicked” some of their work. It’s too bad psychosis and bad management stifled The Beach Boys from realizing their maximum potential.
But if you’re bored with today’s music – it’s worth the time to actually listen to entire bodies of work without judgment or expectation. The results are surprising!
