10/8/2008 Update:

I totally forgot to add the Mayor Roberts “Quickest Ribbon Cutting of the Year” last week!

My guess is that 5 Guys burgers are so friggin’ good – that Davey wasted zero time on the fanfare and wanted to chomp down on the fresh cooked meat! I certainly don’t blame him!!

9/29/2008 First Impressions:

Myself and two Hoboken411 readers stopped by Five Guys Burgers and Fries this afternoon for lunch.

Six thumbs up for Five Guys!

We’ve all been waiting patiently for Five Guys Burgers and Fries (FGBAF) to open up, and it was worth the wait!

Two of the owners, Jim Hare and Phil Surico were outside greeting customers as they walked in to their first (of eight) FGBAF locations to open in Hudson County. Nice touch!

Here’s the menu

Simple yet delicious

FGBAF’s business model is simple: focus on what they do best – make burgers and french fries!

The restaurant is laid out similarly to a fast food place. The ordering counter is in the back, with various seating in front. You place your order – then wait by the pick up counter. There are no trays – just you and you brown paper bag of food. Free refills on the drinks as well.

Frankly, I’m a bit too tired to craft a flowing review – so here are our bullet point observations:

  • General consensus: “Delicious,” “We’ll be back,” “Perfectly done!”
  • Regular burgers are a “double” and little burgers are a “single. Each beef patty is between 3.2 and 3.4 ounces of meat.
  • All toppings on your burger are no extra charge.
  • Free peanuts to eat while you wait.
  • Service was fast, and the staff was extremely well-trained for the first day open. Good job guys!
  • Everything is cooked fresh. No freezer in the establishment.
  • You can call in your order ahead of time – but all fries are cooked on the spot, so be prepared to wait about 2 minutes regardless. There is a separate register and line for pick-up orders.
  • They’re open till 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, and the owners are have been made aware of the “late night crowd” potential.
  • Seating was a bit tight.
  • If you don’t want a burger, they also sell hot dogs and “veggie sandwiches.”
  • Here’s the menu for you to review…

That’s about it! We predict great success for FGBAF! Nap time for 411 now…

8/19/2008 Update & Taste Test:

We’re getting very close to having our very own delicious Five Guys Burgers & Fries!

Sneak Peek

Last weekend, I stopped by the Absecon location. The place was buzzing with customers, and orders were flying out the door. Much to my surprise, the burgers were out of this world! (I had cheese, onions, pickles & jalapenos) The fries on the other hand, while fresh cut potatoes, were just a tad too oily and could have been a bit more “well done.”

But I still can’t wait to have these burgers around the block! Hopefully the prices are in line with the other locations (I doubt it…)

Sizes & Calories

One thing to note: They have two burger sizes: Regular and Little. I thought it was literally the size of the burger. But keep in mind a regular burger is TWO burgers (i.e., a “double”) and the little is just a “single.” I still shoveled the double burger down with ease.

You can check their nutrition facts here.

A single plain burger is 540 calories with no toppings or condiments. Add 280 for a double. So a bacon cheeseburger will clock in at just about 1000 calories! Holy moly!

Who else has had a burger from Five Guys recently?

7/24/2008 Update:

Was walking by, and saw massive progress: A sign draped in the window!

From the looks of it, they were “working” but seem a ways off. If they can finish in August, it’d be a miracle. Otherwise, put fresh batteries in the H.A.T.T.!

3/11/2008:

One great burger place just isn’t enough!

Guess what’s coming to the old Battaglia’s location at 319 Washington Street? Five Guys Burgers and Fries!

I’m a bit speechless with the influx of tasty burgers in Hoboken.
