Bow Tie Cinemas Hoboken NJ Movie TimesWith that stupid movie The Interview out of the equation at theaters – you might be torn between two other movies to waste your money on this weekend. You have Unbroken (over-hyped Angelina Jolie directed flick), a supposedly “true story” about some Olympian / Prisoner of War. What turned me off was the number of reviewers who all agreed that there was no emotional connection to any of the characters. Reason enough not to see it.

Then you have The Gambler, starring Mark Wahlberg. Also receiving so-so reviews, but the subject matter seems more accessible to audiences. “Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams) and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring (Alvin Ing) and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother (Jessica Lange) in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett’s future. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance…”

Too bad Bow Tie didn’t opt to show a good movie – like Wild starring Reese Witherspoon. Seems like a decent story.
