The Center for the Performing Arts at DeBaun Auditorium and Pushcart Players, New Jersey’s premiere theatre company for young and family audiences, are happy to celebrate New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s “Family Week at the Theatre” with the production Cuentos del Arbol, on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at 3pm at DeBaun Auditorium, 5th & Hudson Sts. in Hoboken, NJ.

To introduce the best of New Jersey’s professional theatres to young people and family audiences, the New Jersey Theatre Alliance designed Family Week at the Theatre, an annual statewide theatre festival. This program provides a unique opportunity for young people to experience the magic of live theatre with their parents and extended family by providing free tickets to children aged 5-13 for an entire week during March. To bring Family Week to Hoboken, The Center is pleased to present Pushcart Players’ production of Cuentos del Arbol (Tree Tales), a joyful bilingual musical that brings colorful stories drawn from Spanish folklore to the stage.

Cuentos del Arbol has been delighting young and family audiences throughout the country with its celebration of universal and timeless themes that explore human values, challenges, hopes and dreams regardless of age or ethnic origin. Perfect for audiences of any age, Cuentos del Arbol is the ideal introduction to Spanish as a spoken language, an excellent event for ESL students and offers a special opportunity to make theatre a shared and cross-generational family experience.

The hour-long production has four actors who play many different characters throughout the play. The music is fully orchestrated, rooted in Latino-style rhythms, and is composed and arranged by Larry Hochman (many Broadway, film and TV credits). Since Family Week was designed to make theatre an experience shared by children, parents and grandparents, this play was written to take this multi-generational concept one step further by making theatre accessible to Spanish and Latin American bilingual families in which parents or grandparents might not attend because of limited English.

Pushcart Players is a dynamic ensemble of professional (Actors’ Equity) theatre artists, well known for bringing “a little bit of Broadway” to town, and introducing young audiences to the wonder, joy and magic of live theatre. Pushcart is now in its 34th season of producing theatre and arts-in-education programming for young viewers.
