Hit and Run: Pedestrian Struck

2/21/2008:

This seems to be happening more often.

About 10 minutes in the past, near 8th and Adams, pedestrian struck by a car that left the scene. It was reported to be a black Lincoln Town Car type vehicle (perhaps a gypsy cab?) with partial license plate character of “L.”

About a month ago, I spoke to a neighbor of the woman who was hit. He said that she has memory loss but is getting back on her feet again.

I hope that we find out what happens when the taxi driver gets his day in court.

Prayers for the woman…justice for the hit and run driver. Just plain logic: If the man was an illegal, he would not have been able to injure this woman if he was not here in the first place. Think about it. In any event, he did a at least one wrong thing.

First, I’m glad they caught the guy/suspect. Its true cars travel these street at excessive speeds. Though I’d like to address what I think is the larger issue…Lets all be honest, the dumbest law ever passed in any town/state in America was that pedestrians have the right of way. This law has essentially encouraged people to walk confidently in front of traffic. Having a car in town and being on both sides of that wheel, this perspective holds real value. I have been momentarily distracted 25 yards before a clear intersection myself, traveling at 15-20 mph and looked up and found people crossing out of nowhere and not even looking at me, like the law will protect them from the hood of my car. It’s insane. I have seen pedestrians stepping out in front of traffic, ignorantly expecting the cars to stop in time, so many times I have lost count. Let’s face it, law or no law, don’t walk in front of oncoming traffic unless you see the driver obeying the law and yielding.

Tell me: what difference does that make if he is illegal or not?[/quote]
