Reader Mail: Straight Razor Shaves

2/15/2008:

Another simple reader mail for you.

“Know of any good barbershops in Hoboken that provide an old-school straight razor shave?”

I know you can get one at Hair I am on 5th St. between Adams Street and Jefferson, but haven’t tried it personally, so I offer no recommendations. Can anyone steer him in the right direction?

A good old fashion is a rare find and if you find one keep it a secret, you don’t want it to be over run. The last male barber that cut my hair was awful, a haircut shouldn’t hurt. He killed me he must have using dull hedge cutters. I miss the old timers with the straight razor hair cuts and the shave[with a differnt razor]. At one time there was Stevens barbers, Pat and Vinnys, Johnny Bananas& a few others and they had one thing in common they served apprenticeship in the old country.
D&V Barber Shop on Washington St. next to Helmers… You are correct the staff there is not to hot any longer. The last Barber and I mean real Barber there was Vito, this guy gave an amazing straight razor shave, really excellent. However he left to open his own Barber Shop. Now I don’t think anyone really does it there any longer. If you want to travel about ten minutes Vito opened his shop in Carlstadt, it called “Vito’s Barber Shop”. I go there once in awhile just for the great hot towel straight edge shave.. Tony
I got a haircut there once, and I Vito used the straight razor and hot towel instead of an electric razor for my sideburns and neck. It was a good haircut. Sad to hear he’s gone.

Yes, Dominic and Vincent were really HOT!! LOL …(both in their 70’s). And as for Vito being the last “real barber”( using cartridge razor)… what a joke!. For the rest of us , looking for a old good hair cut, no frills; just quality… D & V is just the perfect place. That’s what I get every time I go there.

Pasquale in “Hair I Am” performs the old-school straight razor shave. He’s on 5th street between Adams & Jefferson. I witnessed him shaving an older guy and he works like an artist.

That is a GREAT picture of D&V. Domenic is a great guy but probably now just a little past his prime with the scissors. Personally, I never cared as I always like sitting there talking with him regardless of the outcome. The rest of the team there had really slipped in quality. Too bad as I really liked the vibe of the place and the owner. Just not a place to rely on now.
