Reader Mail: Walk/Don’t Walk

2/15/2008:

Today we have a short and sweet Hoboken411 reader letter that states:

“Why do we not have walk/don’t walk signs along all of Washington Street?”

I have a couple suggested reasons why not. Add your own if you wish!

 • “We’re waiting till someone complains (or dies)”
 • “Why bother? People ignore them anyway”
 • “Damnit, I was gonna use that budget money in Atlantic City!”
 • “The State says we don’t have to. We strive to do the ‘bare minimum’ here in Hoboken”
 • “Jaywalking? What’s that?”

TGIF.

I thought I was the only one, but agreed on that.
I get confused by the walk/dont walk at the PATH, and sometimes don’t start out right away, because the numbers are in orange, the same color as the don’t walk signal. In other places with the timed sign, the numbers are white like the walking person.
It used to be that signals with the “orange numbers” countdown were used where only the last 10 or so seconds are counted down – when the “hand” starts flashing to let people know how much time they have left to get out of the intersection. However, when they started doing the “entire time” countdown, they ran into the opposite problem you mention – green/white numbers would confuse people who took that color as “walk” even if the sign read “2” seconds left. So, on the side of caution the red numbers won out.

You forgot the idiots who jump out from behind the bus instead of walking to the corner where a driver can see them. Next time I spit out the window and say sorry I didn’t see you! 😈
Come on homeworld, London? You mean to tell me all of the people crossing Washington just flew in from Britain? I’m sure the visitors from Senegal are amazed at our paved streets but I think they can catch on. Most people living here or coming in have come from a location in the U.S.
I never said anyone was from London… The other poster said he never saw any traffic light that went from Red to Yellow to Green, so I said I have seen that in London.
