Hoboken Flood Watch – Again
12
February
2/12/2008:
After numerous inaccurate weather forecasts this winter, maybe they’ll get one right.
It seems this little snow is part of a one-two punch that will bring the area heavy precipitation over the next couple days. Will we get any damaging floods from this system?

Hoboken Flood Watch
HEAVY RAIN EXPECTED ACROSS THE REGION TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING…
A COMPLEX WEATHER SYSTEM WILL BRING SNOW AND MIXED PRECIPITATION TO THE AREA THIS EVENING. AS WARM AIR WORKS IN OFF THE OCEAN…PRECIPITATION WILL CHANGE TO RAIN AND BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES. A SECOND SYSTEM WILL ADD MORE RAINFALL ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING.
SNOW AND MIXED PRECIPITATION WILL CHANGE TO RAIN LATER THIS EVENING AND BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES. BY MORNING… ONE HALF TO THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH OF RAIN IS POSSIBLE. A SECONDARY SYSTEM WILL MOVE THROUGH ON WEDNESDAY… WITH AN ADDITIONAL INCH TO ONE AND ONE HALF INCHES POSSIBLE BY WEDNESDAY EVENING.
LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS ARE POSSIBLE IF ORGANIZED BANDS OF PRECIPITATION DEVELOP.
* THIS HEAVY RAIN WILL FALL PRIMARILY ON FROZEN GROUND… WHICH WILL INCREASE RUNOFF RATES. IN ADDITION… ANY SNOW THAT FALLS THIS EVENING WILL MELT AND ADD TO THE RUNOFF. THE POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING WILL INCREASE LATER IN THE DAY ON WEDNESDAY. RESIDUAL RUNOFF MAY KEEP WATER LEVELS HIGH UNTIL THURSDAY MORNING.

Lovely. I walk through the pictured intersection (or delta, as it may be) every day.

it’d be nice to see more plants on sidewalks to soak up some of this water. oh well. urban living. guess i just need to get used to it.

plants to soak up the water? are you crazy? only if those plants could operate a couple of GE 10k GPM pumps!
