Reader Mail: Hoboken Reporter is selective

One Hoboken411 reader mentioned the racial turban incident last week over at Madison Bar, involving an employee of Liberty Realty.

Love the site. The scanner came in real handy during the fire.

You reported on the Madison Turban incident, along with channel 2 and 5 and some others, but the Hoboken Reporter did not. The name of the female reported in the incident is Carrie Covello. The name rung a bell so I googled ‘Covello Hoboken’ and I came across Joe Covello of liberty real estate. With a little more digging I found out that a Carrie works(ed) there too.

She is missing from the current page

I can flip through the HR and it is pretty obvious that a major portion of the advertising comes from real estate. So the only question is why HR left out the story. It is hard to imagine that they simply missed it, unless they missed it on purpose.

With very few exceptions, I think the media’s obligation is to print the truth, not serve the “best interests” of the people or anybody else by intentionally slanting its stories.

Unfortunately, few media outlets, if any, have a business model that allows that to happen, and even stories that are not slanted for business reasons are often slanted for political reasons.

That’s why we should get our information from as many sources as possible, treating each of them individually with a healthy degree of skepticism.

Both the Hoboken Reporter and 411 provide us with lots of important information that we might not otherwise get. Neither is immune to bias. We’re lucky to have them both, and in the end, we need to use our own brains to evaluate the credibility of the info that we’re getting..
