2/3/2008 Update:
In case anyone is wondering what the “243″ stands for, it’s Seth’s pledge number at his fraternity “Phi Delt.” The number meant a lot to him, and he used it very often. So the family thought it was an ideal name for the foundation in his name.
2/2/2008:
The family of Seth Dembowitz, the man who died in Tuesday’s fire at 1203 Washington Street, has established The 243 Foundation in his honor. The 243 Foundation is a charitable fund to promote fire safety and awareness.

Donations can be sent to:
The 243 Foundation
c/o Richard F. Michaelson, Esq.
2300 Chestnut Street, Suite 320
Philadelphia, PA 19103
Additionally, services for Seth will be as follows:
Sunday, February 3 at 12:30pm
Levine’s Funeral Home
4737 Street Road
Trevose, PA 19053
The burial will take place immediately thereafter at:

What does the 243 stand for?

I wonder that as well. You’d think “1203 Foundation” would be the name.

maybe it was his apartment #?

143 is text message shorthand for “I love you.”
Maybe 243 is “we love you”?

Despite all of the technological advances over the past 30 years, we still live in a country where a perfectly healthy 28 year old man can die in an apartment fire. I support Seth’s family for taking on the initiative of promoting fire safety and awareness. While I don’t know the details of Seth’s death, I do know that replacing the 9 volt battery in your smoke detector can save your life. As simple as this may sound, many people live without working smoke detectors. A little bit of education goes a long way.
411, thank you for advertising “The 243 Foundation”. While I fully support helping the victims of the fire at 1203 Wash, I believe it’s also important to take steps to try and prevent a catastrophe like this from happening again. I encourage everyone who reads this posting to send a check for $5, $10, $20 or any amount that you are comfortable sending.
Thank you,
Brian

My name is Marti and I am one of Seth’s sisters.
First I wanted to thank you all for your thoughts and kind words about my brother - he meant a lot to so many people and we will all be missing him.
Secondly, “243″ was Seth’s fraternity pledge number and he used that number for everything after that. It meant a lot to him, and it was fitting for us to use that for this foundation.
Thank you all again for all of your support and if you can, as Brian said, a little goes a long way.

That makes sense. Phi Delts take a lot of pride in their pledge number.

MY SON DIED SENSELESSLY.PLEASE CHECK OUT 243 FUND OUR FAMILY HAS ESTABLISHED TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR FIRE SAFETY AND HOPEFULLY PUSH CITY COUNCIL, ETC. TO MAKE THESE NECESSARY CHANGES. Hi Arlene,
I just wanted to say agan how very sorry I am for what happened to Seth. Your and your family are doing a wonderful thing with the 243 fund and I hope it will save many lives as well as honor Seth’s memory. I will always remeber Seth how he was in high school–smart, kind, funny, and popular!

Not a day goes by where I don’t think about Seth. I still don’t understand what happened, it doesn’t make sense. I hung out with him the night before the fire. It is sad not to see him on the way to work.

[Hi Jodie,
You are such a sweet young lady. I just received a packed of 243 Foundation contribution and letters, notes last night and read your note 2 times. I laughed and it certainly brought back memories. I remember the “frosty beverages” and I believe Seth carried a mug of coffee which I made every morning. He told me about Bielllo and several students defiance and what you said is/was so true. He didn’t really get into trouble, ever as far as I know. He had charisma, personality and a way of making people smile and laugh. I’m glad he did for you. He mentioned you to me and I certainly remember you from younger days. I planned on calling or emailing sometime soon. It was pure joy reading your letter. Thank you. Arlene. I will pass it along to Adam.
