Fatal 5 car wreck on Viaduct

1/24/2008 Update:

A Hoboken Ambulance Corp member notified Hoboken411 to say that cops seemed to be taking action on the troublesome viaduct. It’s good to know the city is doing something to make this speed ramp safer. I still highly recommend rumble strips. ASAP!

“I was on duty at the Ambulance Corps and heard on the radio a cop car pulling cars over two at a time on the viaduct between about 4 and 6pm. I think he was parked at or near the bottom of it, but we didn’t drive over there, so I can’t be sure.

As I enjoy the occasional workout walk to Union City and don’t want the same fate as that guy sitting at the red light there that weekend, I was cheering the cop on!”

1/21/2008 Correction:

Woman erroneously reported as dead

A victim who was reported as dead yesterday is still alive, but in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center.

The third person, who was the wife of one of the victims killed in Saturday’s crash, had been reported to have perished in the crash by Hoboken Public Safety Director Bill Bergin. He said he got this information from police reports, but offered no apologies for reporting the inaccurate news.

Hoboken University Medical Center Spokeswoman Joan Quigley said that the woman worked at the hospital for the past 30 years as a registered nurse.

At the current time, no information was being made available by Hackensack University Medical Center.

My apologies for the original incorrect report, and hope she makes a full recovery.

1/20/2008 Update 2:

A reader informed Hoboken411 that the woman who perished in yesterday’s accident was the wife of Domenic Lucivero, who runs the Hoboken Adult Soccer League (HASL) in town. They said that “Domenic is a special man, and we wish him the best through this terrible time.”

Our condolences to families of the victims.

1/20/2008:

With two people killed, and many others injured, I’m curious if now may be a good time to implement some kind of speeding deterrent?

While speed bumps would probably make things worse (i.e., cars vaulting in the air and off the viaduct completely), rumble strips may be the answer. Either similar to what was recently installed in various parts of Hoboken, or perhaps what’s near the toll plazas and shoulders on the NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.

I can’t think of a better solution. Can you?

1/19/2008 11:15pm Update:

Two dead, one in critical condition

Bad news from this terrible and tragic accident. In addition to the first victim that died shortly after the crash, a second person has died several hours later. A third person who was very badly injured is currently struggling for life.

It’s been said that the 36-year old woman who lost her life, apparently caused the accident by hitting the car ahead of her when traveling 60mph down the viaduct. The couple she struck was severely injured, killing the man while the wife is presently hanging on to life at Jersey City Medical Center.

An additional 8 other individuals were injured.

Names have not been released yet.

1/19/2008 4:50pm:

Bad wreck on viaduct

A serious five car accident on the 14th Street Viaduct occurred within the past 30 minutes. Some injuries seemed serious, and medical assistance was called in from Union City and Jersey City. One man was being carted off while a medical tech was pressing on his chest (as if his heart had stopped.)

From the sound of what’s taking place on the live scanner now, it appears this may have been fatal, and the NJ State Police may be called in.

Hope everyone is alright, but I do wonder how accidents like this take place on a perfectly straight road.

You still don’t have a final report after all this time?

silva…I do not think I can comment about that…sorry. I have heard about the 911 calls and apparently, someone who worked on the show with Opie and Anthony spoke about it on the radio show. When I tried to contact that person to get information, I was hung up and told “we don’t have time to talk about that!” I did not have the time or energy to pursue the case of the 911 calls at the time, b/c we were busy caring for my mom. Let me know if you hear of anything. Thanks.

This is a 100% coverup no doubt! The woman did have problems with some drug use and booze. She was driving around Jersey City and Union City before the accident like a nut and there were calls made to 911 (which is run by the Hudson County Sheriff’s Dept) concerning this womans driving. Both cops from UCPD and JCPD were looking for the car before it went down the viaduct and killed those people in for lack of a better word “accident”.

Because the family were and are still very connected in town and friends with Labruno everything was covered up to protect them and avoid or diminish any legal ramifications. This is really no different than the Diane Schuler case except that for the fact the ME report was not fudged.

Labruno used some favors in the prosecutors office and sheriffs office as well as with the MEO to cover this up. It has been done before many, many times. There will most likely be no justice in this case and even if the body is exhumed the finding still may be in question because who knows what actions were taken to contaminate any potential evidence that may be left to prove a case.

1st to answer the question of what car the driver was driving: the driver that caused the accident was driving a chevy impala, so toyota is NOT to blame for this accident. My parents…the 1st ones struck by the driver who caused the accident were in a toyota corolla. Next, I do not know or will ever know if in fact this “accident” was covered up by any political affiliation. I cannot continue to think that it was or else our lives now cannot continue. If in fact it was covered up because the Lucivero family had some political connection, that is crime that they have to deal with. They will someday have to answer to someone with a higher power than that of a politician. We cannot continue to try to punish or find justice for someone that no longer exists. That woman who killed my father, killed herself also. In response to bornandrazedinhobo who said: This is a 100% coverup no doubt! The woman did have problems with some drug use and booze. So sorry about your family. I think about that ‘accident’ almost every time I drive down the viaduct and have to stop at the light.

The newspaper articles quoted above stated the driver that caused the accident was driving a Chevrolet Malibu, not a Toyota.
