Plane down in the Hudson?
11
January
1/11/2008:
Overheard the scanner now: Reports that a plane had gone down in the Hudson River (on the NY side, by Chelsea Piers.)
Apparently NY officials couldn’t find anything, and requested that Hoboken PD check our side of the river.
Anyone living in the high-rises along the river see anything?

I went down to Maxwell park (in the friggin pouring rain at 2:15am) to see if anything was going on.. the police had checked every waterfront area and saw nothing. NYC Police boats were up north near Edgewater.
I guess it was a bogus call, or there’s somebody missing and no one knows about it. After all, it was thundering and lightning at the time.
Oscar saw a rabbit and has been nervously pacing for the past 4 hours. Shopping list today: Stuffed Rabbit at Cornerstone Pets.

I live in the archstone building on garden and observer and was awoken around 2am by what sounded like a bomb hit, it definitely did not sound like thunder. Unfortunately I couldn’t see out of my window very well due to the rain. I hope we hear more on this if something did indeed crash

Maybe that bomb sound was when Artie Lange, in a drunken, heroin clouded stupor, fell down the stairs after his gig at Danny’s. I imagine that heffalump barreling down a could flights of stairs would make quite a racket.

We heard a very loud ‘boom’ last night…wife said it was thunder. It was an odd sound, but I’m not really sure if it was a plane going down. The acoustics between the towers of our building make thunder sound really weird sometimes. If it was a small plane that went down…you’d think someone might have seen it, right? Weird.

I was woken up by what I too thought was thunder and in my sleepy haze remember thinking – I knew it was supposed to rain but I didn’t hear anything about thunder and lightening. And you’re right, it didn’t sound like thunder per se. But I fell right back to sleep and that was the end of that. I doubt we’d hear a small plane go into the Hudson (unless of course you live right near the water). Hmm.

wonder why they thought it was a plane? did someone see something or was it just the noise? i know some smaller planes don’t always have to give flight plans – but wouldn’t someone at an airport notice a plane missing? scary.

Wow, bad circumstances if it was indeed a plane. Late night, cold, strong currents.
2 years ago, January of 2006, there was a plane that crashed into the Hudson uptown, I think past the GW bridge, where no one saw the plane actually go in. The guys were rescued, but authorities had to use sonar to find the plane. If NYPD was asking for HPD’s assist, then I’d believe it.
I wonder if there’s some kind of surveillence camera system that monitor’s the Hudson?

I also heard what i thought was thunder, but the sound lingered a little longer than normal thunder, which i remember thinking was strange.

I heard thunder around 4:30. . . and again around 7:15 this morning.
I’m too far back from the river to have heard/seen anything at 2am when this supposedly happened.

Don’t think you would hear a small plane hitting the water that far away…thunder on the other hand you would hear.

Heard weird loud sound as well. Didn’t sound like thunder to me either; I thought it was a transformer blowing??? I heard there would be rain, but a thunder storm???? very surprised at that.

If something blew up many hours ago, don’t you think we all would have heard about it by now?

There was a reported plane down last night around 2AM. When harbor got on scene at Chelsea pier, they spoke with an witness who further reported of a plane going down I/A/O W 20 street into the Hudson. FDNY and NYPD searched the area, and also requested units on the other side of the Hudson (JC/Hoboken etc) check their waterfront to see if there are any additional reports of a plane down. (note, this didn’t actually happen until about 15-20 minutes in to the incident). Nothing further was found, and everyone went back in service…
They gave it more credit because they had a witness report saying that they saw it as opposed to giving it potentially less attention with the standard “1 call only on this”
There you have it.
