Carlo’s doesn’t have this!

8/21/2009:

Now that’s a gut-busting cupcake!

Buddy Valestro at Carlo’s City Hall Bake Shop may be the Cake Boss – but he doesn’t he the world’s largest cupcake!

Even if he tried breaking the Guinness Book Record just set by this New Hampshire baking company – he’d probably need a zoning variance, and get hung up in the permit process. So it’s better off that he sticks to being a TV celebrity instead.

    12/28/2008:

    C’est la vie 2008!

hoboken-411-for-locals-2009.gifContinuing the annual tradition here at Hoboken411.com, I present you with a mostly complete list of businesses that came, left or changed in 2008!

Don’t forget, you can browse Hoboken411 by using the categories to the right – or the search box above that. Furthermore – if you want to catch up with a week’s worth of top stories – you can also check the Hoboken week in review entries (posted every Sunday).

Dishing out your usual news stories, wacky political debacles, fires, murders, and local business updates – 411 continued to grow in 2008 – 30% more reader traffic, 50% increase in registered users, and over a quarter million unique visitors each month! (in fact a total of more than 15 million minutes were spent reading Hoboken411 in 2008 so far!)

Although there are over 6,000 entries (and 125,000 user comments) published here on H411, you don’t see most of the work that takes place at “command central.” Since I manage every aspect of this website – a considerable amount (most) of time is spent “off the air” and behind the scenes. Thousands of weekly emails, technical and design work, and exhaustive planning is also on my plate. The funny thing is that to this day – I still get countless email testimonials indicating that “you guys do a great job!” I’m honored that what I produce leads readers to believe that a team of individuals are running the show. But as always, it’s the community – YOU – that ties all the loose ends together and makes 411 so valuable. 2009 here we come!

    More than just business!

Anyway, most of us know what the big stories were this year – The budget debacle, giant property tax increase and state takeover, some big fires (1203 Wash, 1202 Hudson and a previously dumpy dive bar), and tragic loss of lives (the viaduct car wreck, a murder in the projects, and a DWI bar owner). This, on top of the regular failure of city infrastucture (water mains mostly), city council meetings and much more! But that’s not the purpose of this post…

    Show me the stats!

(feel free to let me know if I overlooked any in the comments section)

    • Around 30 businesses are gone (or relocated)
    • Over 50 new businesses came to Hoboken!
    • And several others wanted to – but never came to fruition

So what came and went in 2008?
    Find out after the jump…

    July

    7/10/2008:

Tarragon’s publicity company sent Hoboken411 this press release yesterday. Figured I’d give them the opportunity to spread the good news about their Edgewater development.

    One Hudson Park 90% Sold

edgewater-one-hudson-park-tarragon-hoboken.jpgEdgewater’s Only High-Rise Condominium Almost Sold Out
EDGEWATER, N. J. (July 9, 2008) – Tarragon Corp.’s new condominium development, One Hudson Park in Edgewater along New Jersey’s desirable Gold Coast, is now more than 90 percent sold.

Nearly all of the one-, two- and three-bedroom homes in the distinct luxury residential tower are sold, and only a handful of penthouses remain. One Hudson Park has been selling steadily since its first residents moved in in May 2007.

“One Hudson Park offers its residents spacious living areas and high-end amenities, including an indoor lap pool and a fully furnished rooftop deck, with incredible views of the Manhattan skyline,” said William Rosato, president of Tarragon Development Corp. “Sales have continued to stay strong because of the building’s convenient location, modern architecture and impeccable finishes.”

Located on River Road, these ultra-spacious condominium homes boast highly sought-after features such as gracious foyers, expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and corner living and dining rooms. Separate gourmet kitchens and sleek stone baths offer a level of contemporary elegance found in only the finest new condominiums. All residences are equipped with washer/dryers and exceptional closet space. Dramatic glass- and steel-trimmed balconies play host to sweeping New York City skyline views.

The increased sales are also attributed to favorable interest rates and a change in attitude among buyers, many of whom have decided to move forward after waiting for months on the sidelines, Rosato added.

One Hudson Park houses an array of amenities including its 50-foot indoor lap pool, a fitness center and yoga studio, a children’s playroom and a board room for private business or quiet study. Other luxury features include a 24-hour attended lobby, deeded parking, and a media lounge with catering kitchen. There also is a Tarragon-built public park adjacent to the building. For more information on One Hudson Park, please visit www.onehudsonpark.com.

    11/13/2007:

Pet owners: has your dog ever come close to getting fatally poisoned??

    oscar-sleeping-hoboken411-hoboken.jpg

    The situation

This past Friday, as I was getting out of the shower to get ready for a lunch meeting, I noticed my dog was eating something strange. It was one of the rat poison sticks that the exterminator had left when I was having my mouse problem tended to. He ate one whole stick.

hoboken-rat-poison-bait-station.jpgMind you, the exterminator knew I had a dog, and just told me to keep him away from the bug spray for an hour until it dried. He was just tossing these sticks in places to combat my mice problem (such as behind the stove, in corners, by radiators).

He obviously didn’t have good aim, and Oscar was able to eat one (I was pissed after I just provided him with a fresh bowl of gourmet dog food). Knowing I had a pet, these poison sticks should have been placed in pet-friendly containers, but I’ll bring that up with the exterminating company.

Anyway, time was certainly of the essence, and I was recommended Hoboken Animal Infirmary on 6th & Adams (over the animal hospital on Washington St. – “less expensive”)

    Treatment and costs

I drive Oscar there, and upon arrival I immediately felt I was in slow motion. An hour and a half to “treat” him (with no other animals there). I brought an example of which stick he ate, but they didn’t know what it was. I had to call the exterminator and they faxed the spec sheet (“Final” Blox brand rat poison).

Here’s what they did. They “examined him”, then weighed him. They tried inducing vomiting through special eye drops ($128 emesis induction). That didn’t work. Then they gave him a Vitamin K1 injection ($48). He then puked up the poison stick.

    oscar-rat-poison-vet-bill-2.jpg

He looked fine to me. The treatment recommended was a dose of activated charcoal powder (which they were supposed to do there, but made me do it – causing a great mess here in the process – but hey, the gave it to me for “free” wow), and two vitamin K1 pills daily ($108). Total tab was almost $400! They also wanted me to come back for bloodwork ($100 or more, depending). Does this seem like a racket to you? The vet said that herself and TWO techs were required to treat my kind and gentle dog. Is it normal to charge a $100 “emergency” fee during business hours? It wasn’t after-hours, it was the middle of the day!

I wish I would have gone to Edgewater General Animal Hospital, which I have heard nothing but good things about, and I’d probably have $200 more in my pocket.

Am I just unaware that these costs are “standard” in Hoboken? Is this how much all vets cost? Please tell me I’m not wrong for feeling a bit ripped off. If that’s the way it is when you own a pet, then perhaps I should have done a little research ahead of time, my bad!

    6/20/2007 Update:

Anyone work for Cablevision? Many correspondents responded and said that this person: fdnetwork@optonline.net had replied to their inquiries to the Craigslist ad.

Ironically, the response was “Give me you number, etc, and I’ll call you back”… It’s most certainly a scam of some sort.

    What’s up with that?

    6/19/2007 email:

    Got this email from Hobokengourmet.net.

Must love the internet. Why would someone post inaccurate pictures? Must be fun.

“Someone brought to my attention the posting on your site regarding The Hoboken Gourmet Company being for sale.
This in incorrect, the business is not for sale and never has been. We hope to continue to provide our customers with the quality fresh foods and service we have since 1995.

    6/19/2007 Update:

Seems like less than a week after 411 reviewed this place for the first time, they posted a for-sale ad on Craigslist! What’d I do?

  • Get out of Hoboken: Fall Foliage Cruise

    23

    October

Looking for something different to do?

Well now through November 12th, the New York Waterway is offering the “Shades of Autumn River Cruise“.

Depending on the weather, it’s a great way to get out of Hoboken, smell some fresh air, and see some beautiful sights.

We went on this cruise this past weekend, and despite some annoying issues that happened as a result of NY Waterway over-booking the boat, we still enjoyed it tremendously. Even without the promised hot cider and donuts or even a place to sit, it was still a refreshing thing to do.

Learn more about our trip, see more pictures, and read the description from the NY Waterway..

What do you think of their summary of mainly Washington Street restaurants?

This article was republished from njmonthly.com

    ——————

Hoboken’s Washington Street boasts such a high concentration of eateries that it rivals Manhattan’s Restaurant Row—or even the Champs Élysées in Paris, especially in summer when you can eat outside and watch the world go by.

To sample this mile-square town’s culinary riches, start on Washington Street at La Isla, a tiny shoebox of a place where some of the best Cuban food this side of Havana is served up at a very few tables and at the counter. A little farther down are Schnackenberg’s Luncheonette, a 1950s-style eatery that serves terrific burgers, sandwiches, ice cream, and egg creams, and Frankie & Johnnie’s, where you’ll find great chops and steaks in a piano-bar setting (an appealing dining option for the meat-and-potatoes guy in your life). If you’ve stayed out too late, stop by for breakfast at the tiny Hoboken Gourmet Company café. Indian food lovers will enjoy Karma Kafe, where you can dine outside, and India on the Hudson; the food at both is a great bargain, particularly the buffet lunches at $8.95.

One of the more down-to-earth Hoboken eateries is Robongi, a bare-bones Japanese restaurant with inspired sushi that keeps the crowds coming. Nearby, the Frozen Monkey Café offers a sort of swinging ’60s-style setting where you can sit inside or opt for a sidewalk table for your coffee and dessert; sandwiches are also available. If you’re hungry and don’t want to break the bank, you can’t do much better than a huge slice of pizza ($2) from Benny Tudino’s.

We’d be remiss in not recommending one of Hoboken’s favorite eateries, Amanda’s, a charming restaurant with reasonably priced American food and wine. Just across the road, the more casual Elysian Café serves American and French bistro food and also offers a bar if you prefer to pop in just for a drink. At Charritos Restaurant, the guacamole is made fresh at your table and the Mexican food is as authentic as it gets. Augustino’s, where the salty language of the waitresses is as much a part of the experience as the reliably excellent Italian food and homey setting, is not to be missed.

hobokenmapAway from Washington Street, check out Cucharamama, the swanky South American companion restaurant to the Cuban hot spot Zafra, just a block away. Both establishments serve food that is so good there is often a line to get in. Lua, one of the newest and most popular places in town, is also known for its Pan-Latino menu, but the pluses here are the spectacular setting and panoramic view of New York City and the Hudson River. Sushi Lounge’s glitzy surroundings and nightly DJ are the perfect backdrop for its delicious Japanese food. Try Sri Thai for simple, cheap, but fabulous Thai food to eat in or take out. Court Street Restaurant and Bar is packed every night, but especially on Wednesday, when a pound-and-a-quarter lobster with all the trimmings will set you back just $15.95.

If you’re in the mood for pizza, head to Grimaldi’s Pizzeria (an offshoot of Grimaldi’s in Brooklyn) for the superb thin-crust pizza. For a healthy dining alternative, try Re Juice A Nation, a juice bar offering smoothies, soups, and sandwiches, plus build-your-own salad. Locals swear by Sobsey’s Produce, where in addition to top-notch fresh produce you can buy free-range meats, baked goods, and gourmet products. Truglio’s Meat Market is a good old-fashioned butcher shop that also makes sandwiches to go. Fiore’s is universally revered here; the place makes its own mozzarella and sells mouthwatering sopressata and other Italian specialties, and the sandwiches are legendary—particularly the Italian tuna on crusty rolls (on Friday) and the hot roast beef with gravy (on Thursday and Saturday). Prepare to see a line out the door on those days. The wait is worth it.
